DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Aug 13: Sugar mills are going through a critical period and will not begin new crushing before disposing of their  surplus stock.  

This was revealed by Maqsood Anwar Qursehi, general-manager Chashma Sugar Mill Dera Ismail Khan in a press briefing here on Monday.

He said sugar mills in the country were going through a crisis and had piles of surplus stock, sufficient to meet the requirement of remaining months of the current year.

He continued that no concrete step was taken by the government for the disposal of surplus stock, which compelled them not to begin new crushing.

He disclosed that Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA) had informed the government about their grievances and were waiting for a positive response.

He urged upon the sugarcane growers to adopt new scientific techniques and introduce new seed variety into their fields to obtain maximum production. —Correspondent
