RAWALPINDI: Local farmers should be trained in ostrich farming, which will be the only way to overcome the shortage of meat in the country, said Pir Mehar Ali Shah- Arid Agriculture University (PMAS-AAUR) Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Rai Niaz Ahmed

Prof Ahmed was speaking at a two-day workshop on commercial ostrich farming at the university on Wednesday. More than 30 farmers from across the country participated in the training.

These farmers will be trained in handling and rearing ostriches for meat, skin and feather production, medication, vaccination and for the production of meat and eggs with reference to health issues.

Prof Ahmed said the prime objective of the workshop was to provide technical knowledge as well as expertise for health and diseases, handling, management and marketing ostrich meat and its by-products.

He said the training also covers various techniques which can result in enhanced meat yield and added that Pakistan has a favourable environment for ostrich farming.

He urged veterinary researchers to put in efforts for diagnosing and preventing diseases to resolve the problems of ostrich farming so it can expand at the national level.
