MULTAN, Aug 12: An unruly mob attacked and thrashed tehsil municipal administration staff for removing encroachments from a bazaar here on Tuesday.

A TMA team, led by tehsil officer (regulation) Khwaja Muhammad Anwar, came to the bazaar on Suraj Kund Road to remove encroachments. The TMA team was also accompanied by a police contingent.

It is learnt that despite hue and cry by the ‘affected’ shopkeepers, the TMA staff removed and threw the confiscated objects of encroachments in a municipality truck. When the TMA team was about to leave, a councillor, Niaz Bhutta, allegedly appeared on the scene and instigated the shopkeepers, who were then chanting slogans against the municipal authorities, to snatch their belongings.

Within no time, dozens of protesters started jostling the TMA staff, and when the latter showed some resistance, they were thrashed. Later, the mob succeeded to unload belongings of the shopkeepers from the municipality truck. The police, however, only played the role of a silent spectator and did not bother to intervene.

Kutabpur police clerk Haider Shah said that a formal report from TMA had been submitted to lodge the FIR, but the SHO was busy somewhere else, so the case had yet to be registered.

A few months ago, a TMA team led by TO (regulation) Khwaja Anwar, had faced a tough situation while carrying out anti-encroachment operation at the local general bus stand when goons of some transporters attacked the municipality officials with iron-rods and bricks. The TO (R) had to be hospitalised for several weeks owing to a head injury.
