Islamabad provides list of 546 Indian prisoners to New Delhi

The government on Saturday handed over a list of 546 Indian prisoners in Pakistan, to the High Commission of India in Islamabad, said a statement, issued from the Foreign Office.

Pakistan and India exchange lists of prisoners in each other's custody twice a year, on January 1 and July 1, respectively under the Consular Access Agreement between the two countries, signed on May 21, 2008.

According to the statement, the list contains the names of 52 civilians and 494 fishermen.

The Indian government will also hand over the list of Pakistani prisoners to Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi, said the statement.

On Jan 6, 2017, the government had released 219 Indian fishermen whereas 78 more are expected to be released during the ongoing month.

Useless exercise !! At first place, these people should not be arrested from both sides unless they commit crime. For common man, the boundary between two nations is artificial one and for political purpose.

Good step releasing these poor fellows. They are long time separated from their families. This 2008 act b/w two countries is really admirable. Wish more such acts which bring harmony among two rivals.

@Indian I dont know how to even respond to such comments coming from Indians any more. Most of the time it is just pure hate and once in a while you hear some postivity.

Both the country should free all fishermen by charging penalty for reasonable amount per prisoners to respective government instead of feeding them from their own pocket. Fisherman are truly innocent. The money received form such penalty on every year should be spent for needy poor people to educate them and providing better life for them. As such both the country will not have any regret and will be happy that money spent to get them freed are being used for good cause. Hope leaders may give some thoughts on this direction.Not harmful to anyone.

great news ! no use holding such innocent people who are trying to earn a livelihood. But you have to figure out a way to keep them out without wasting your energy and money. Maybe fine them small amount

Wish india and pakistan could live like canada and America,as envisioned by Mr. Jinnah. This so called animosity will not benefit any side. What has enemity of 70 years given us?has it been beneficial for any side? Had we lived as Mr.Jinnah and Mr.Gandhi wanted us to live,the story of subcontinent would have been different.There would have been much more development in the nations compared to present.

So why are these people in jail. Poor fishermen accidentally crossover into other's waters. That should not be a big deal and should be warned to leave.
