SHIKARPUR, Aug 8: The president, MMA (Sindh), and MNA from Karachi, Maulana Asadullah Bhutto, has criticized the Sindh government for its poor role and inefficiency in providing relief and distributing food to the affected people in Badin, Thatta, Tharparkar and other parts of the province.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, he expressed concern over the conflict on distribution of food items and other material by the ministers terming it an act of corruption.

He said that the government functionaries were involved in misappropriating funds provided by the government and philanthropists for providing relief to victims of the rain.

He said that the Jamaat-i-Islami had launched a campaign to collect food and other materials for the affected people throughout Sindh, and added that it would be distributing food to about 4,000 affected people in Badin, Thatta, and Thar district.

He criticized the poor health services provided by the government in the affected areas, and demanded the government to establish special medical aid centres at rural and urban areas to provide immediate medical treatment against all kinds of septic diseases spreading in the affected areas.

HYDERABAD: The Anti-Greater Thal Canal Action Committee has criticized the government for failing to provide relief to rain and flood victims.

It held the Water and Power Development Authority responsible for the havoc wreaked in Sindh due to breaches in the Left Bank Outfall Drain and demanded Rs10 billion to provide relief to the people and restore the infrastructure.

The committee that met at the residence of MNA Syed Ali Nawaz Shah in Gulistan-i-Sajjad here on Friday discussed the devastation caused by rains and floods in Sindh.

Briefing journalists in the presence of heads of the component parties, action committee convener Nisar Ahmad Khuhro said the relief package announced by the government was not sufficient to rehabilitate the affected people. He said giving one kilogramme of flour to a family was a joke with them.

He said the government had neither announced nor paid any money to the heirs of rain victims or for rebuilding the destroyed houses. He said the establishment of the Relief Fund had made it clear that the government was only depending on philanthropists. He said the people of Sindh had been let down and betrayed by the government.

Criticizing President Gen Pervez Musharraf for advocating construction of the greater Thal canal, the leader of the opposition in the Sindh Assembly said the president had insulted the Sindhi people by saying that the Thal canal would have to be constructed and asking MPAs and Nazims to go to the people and convince them that construction of the Kalabagh dam was in the interest of the people. He claimed that Gen Musharraf had also said if the dam was not constructed Sindh would not get any water.
