DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Six children of six to 12 years were killed when a bomb that resembled a toy exploded in the Sararogha tehsil of South Waziristan Agency on Sunday.

Local administration officials told Dawn that some children in the Mazak area of Sararogha tehsil had found an object that looked like a toy. They were playing with it when it exploded. As a result, three children died on the spot, while five others were injured.

For treatment the injured children were taken to a hospital in Tank district where two of them died. The other three children were referred to a hospital in Dera Ismail Khan. Later still, one more child succumbed to his injuries.

On Saturday, two children were killed and a girl was injured when they were hit by a landmine in the Sarwekai area of South Waziristan.

Sources identified the dead children as eight-year-old Muhammad Rasool and six-year-old Muhammad Noor. The injured girl was identified as Zainab, 10. Her condition was said to be stable on Sunday.

According to the sources, the military and local administration officials extended financial assistance to the families that lost children in the two explosions.
