LAHORE, Aug 6: Injuries to four members of the Holland-bound Pakistan hockey team have added to the worries of the team management which is hoping that all goes fine before the teams lands in Amsterdam to take part in the Champions Trophy from Aug 16.
Those on the injury list are forwards Mudassar Ali Khan, Muhammad Asim, half back Dilawar Hussain and full back Zeeshan Ashraf ,all suffering from injuries and fitness problems.
“ Obviously we are worried and praying that they (players) regain full fitness before the Champions Trophy and the two-Test series against Holland ahead of the event (champions trophy), said coach Tahir Zaman.
Mudassar is nursing a muscular injury in left leg,Asim is suffering hair follicle infection in left leg, Dilawar has groin problem and Zeeshan has pulled a muscle in the right leg.
“Team medical experts are trying their best that the players recover as soon as possible “,he said.
Pakistan team will go through a litmus test ahead of the Champions Trophy by playing mighty Holland in a two-Test series and the outcome of the event would suggest how much improvement it has made with the return of key players, Nadeem ND, Sohail Abbas and Muhammad Wasim who missed the preparatory tour of Australia where the visitors lost two back-to-back tournaments.
“ It is right in the way that playing Holland before the tournament would help in knowing our personal strength and identifying shortcomings and their remedial measures”, Tahir said
“ Two-test are very important for us and it will be giving our side the necessary warm up for the tournament and we want to try our 18-member squad in the matches to finalise our match plans and strategy for the opening match of the Champions trophy against Australia on August 16 “, he added.
Tahir said the injured players,barring Asim, are 80 to 90 percent fit and are doing light stretching and work out but avoiding strenuous match practice.
“ Asim has been advised complete rest as the injection is painful and we has asked him to take rest for full recovery”,he said.
Pakistan hockey coach said the team management cannot risk injured or half fit players to get into routine high profile training which can hamper their process of their speedy recovery.
“We want a fully fit squad giving their one percent in our entire tour to achieve encouraging results”, Tahir concluded.
Meanwhile, Pakistan team will wind up it training camp in Karachi on Thursday.
The training camp of being in progress at Pakistan Steel Town Astroturf will end on Thursday afternoon after which players will depart to their respective home before reassembling at Lahore to fly to Holland on Sunday.
The boys belonging to Karachi will stay in the city will fly to Lahore on Sunday to join the team for their onward journey to Amsterdam.
Forward Muhammad Nadeem ND is leading the team while half back Waseem Ahmed is his deputy.—APP
