An elderly resident of Azad Jammu and Kashmir was killed after Indian troops hit him from across the Line of Control (LoC) on Saturday, police sources revealed.

The death of Shabbir Khan, who was said to be in his late sixties, in Polas village of Abbaspur sector in the southern Poonch district, coincided with the visit of Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa to the LoC in Muzaffarabad sector.

“The victim was doing some household work in the courtyard of his house when the trigger-happy Indian troops hit him with a burst of fire at about 2pm,” a police official from the area said.

"He died after some time on the spot,” the official added.

Military sources also confirmed the death of the civilian in Indian firing. Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor, who heads the Army's media wing, said in a tweet: "No Indian misadventure shall go without a befitting response".

The heavily militarised dividing line in the disputed region of Jammu and Kashmir has been tense for quite some time, witnessing regular skirmishes and artillery duels between the rival troops notwithstanding a ceasefire agreement signed in November 2003.

According to military sources, India has committed more than 400 ceasefire violations in this year alone, leaving several civilians dead or wounded .
