Indian police raid NDTV founder’s properties

NEW DELHI: India’s federal investigating agency — CBI — raided the properties of NDTV founder Prannoy Roy on Monday over an alleged loan default, and the news channel called it a witch-hunt.

Reports said CBI sleuths searched the office and homes of Prannoy Roy and his wife Radhika in connection with an “alleged bank fraud”.

The news channel denied the charge. “This morning, the CBI stepped up the concerted harassment of NDTV and its promoters based on the same old endless false accusations. NDTV and its promoters will fight tirelessly against this witch-hunt by multiple agencies. We will not succumb to these attempts to blatantly undermine democracy and free speech in India,” the statement said.

“We have one message to those who are trying to destroy the institutions of India and everything it stands for: we will fight for our country and overcome these forces,” NDTV said.

NDTV is one of a very few TV channels that are periodically critical of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. The raids came within days of a snub the channel delivered to a BJP spokesperson who was asked to leave the show after he accused NDTV of nurturing an anti-Hindutva agenda.

NDTV has wavered between hard nationalism, flirting with power brokers and keeping up a secular profile. Its Hindi news channel runs the most watched news programme critical of Hindutva.

CBI had put raid on the house of Mr Pranoy Roy on the basis of complaint filed by Mr Sanjay Dutt ( not the film actor) , director Quantum Securities Pvt Ltd.( QSL ) a financial service company based in Delhi. QSL has stake in NDTV as well as ICICI bank. The FIR has accused the Roys, RRPR Holdings and unknown executives of ICICI Bank and NDTV India of criminal conspiracy, cheating and criminal misconduct under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Corruption Act. The result was total of Rs 48 cr to ICICI bank & loss to minority stakeholder of NDTV due to stock price manipulation. Is this charge not enough to probe the role of Mr Pranoy Roy ?

NDTV is not an institution, its just one of the 1.5 million companies in India. If you have done something wrong you can't simply escape law of the land by playing victim just because you own a media house.. NDTV also raised money by using shell company. And for those who are trying to establish its connection with the government in the centre should know that investigation against NDTV was started in 2004, and notice was sent to them in 2013 during congress govt. Political connections of NDTV owner delayed the investigation.

It is conducted in response to a private complaint by NDTV's own consultant ....AND Reliance Industry of Ambani is also in the picture as a lender to NDTV. Congratulations CBI for going against Reliance Industry. No one should be spared if there is wrongdoing.

Personally It's a good news channel. The only Hindi news channel my family watches. But the truth is that it's a Left leaning. And present Government is Right leaning so due to the differences of Ideology there going to be an obvious clash. And whichever is more powerful will prevail. (Nature's Law)

NDTV has lots of tainted funds and it's owner and anchors have had shady dealings in past to make quick buck. As a channel it's coverage is good, though at times it appears but biased, but that's okay as most channels have their agenda.
