Wahab Riaz declared unfit for remaining Champions Trophy matches

Pacer Wahab Riaz, who had to leave the field during Pakistan's opening Champions Trophy clash against India after an ankle injury, has been ruled unfit for the rest of the tournament, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said in a statement on Monday.
However, fast bowler Muhammad Amir, who also left the field after developing a cramp during Sunday's match, has been declared fit for the remaining matches, official sources told DawnNews.
"A scan has confirmed that Wahab Riaz suffered a deltoid ligament complex after an eversion injury mechanism whilst bowling during the India vs Pakistan match on June 4," said the PCB press release.
"Wahab will not be able to continue to play in remaining games of the Champions Trophy," the statement said, adding that it will take minimum two weeks for the player to recover from his injury.
PCB has sent an official request for Wahab's replacement to the ICC Technical Committee, it said. The fast bowler is likely to be replaced by Mohammad Abbas.
On Sunday, one of the most eagerly awaited matches of the tournament proved a damp squib in the end as India utterly dominated every aspect of a stop-start, rain-interrupted 124-run victory at Edgbaston.
Pakistan won the toss but nothing else went right for them as they dropped catches, persisted with bowlers who bled runs and folded inside 34 overs with the bat.
Apart from the manner of their surrender, Pakistan are also fretting on the fitness of fast bowlers Amir and Wahab.
Amir bowled 8.1 overs before developing severe cramp and leaving the field, while Wahab, who conceded 87 runs in 8.4 wicketless overs in the most expensive spell of five-plus overs in tournament history, hobbled off after twisting an ankle.
"I don't know why they're cramping," coach Mickey Arthur said Monday. "That's something that I need to take up with the medical team."
Wahab had suffered a slight injury on his left knee prior to the start of the tournament, however a Pakistan Cricket Board spokesman had said at the time that it was "nothing serious".
Pakistan play South Africa in their next Group B match at the same venue on Wednesday.

Wahab Riaz is not an international calibre bowler as his action is not natural and misses rthym and flow.
On the hand Junaid and Amir are natural and have fluent action.
Pakistan should not compare themselves with India. They should just play to achieve the target. Team, like whole of the nation, is in depression and not in right mental state to have confidence when anarchy violence and corruption is everywhere starting from the top.
When they psychologically strong responsible and confident the same guys will beat anyone.

Thanks God. But I can't blame only you for the conditions of Pak cricket team. The slump has been laid by our old PCB chairman's over the years. These things can't be improved in overnight. So Pakistani fans are requested not to get too emotional as the losing culture will remain for sometime or it could be decades. It would be good if you stop watching cricket, that obviously can be done, but improvement of Pakistani cricket team looks impossible. And when the PCB has no shame in losing then why do you have shame? Good bye cricket forever.

No single factor was the reason for our loss. We were out-classed in every department of the game. It was not even a match between two very different sides. Remember we barely qualified even to play in this tournament. We simply have not developed enough talent in the last decade. Not a single dependable batsman who can replace Misbah, Younus, Yousuf.

Time to rebuild a new team on merit basis only. Hafeez and Malik should retire and should not be further selected for any international games. Most of our players seems to unfit so need a professional fitness coach. Include new players in the team purely on merit

While I have sympathy with Wahab over his injury but I think it is in Pakistan's best interest that he is not in the squad for the rest of the tournament. A youngster like Mohd Abbas can only but gain from the experience of playing at this Marquee tournament and hopefully Pakistan could reap the benefit in coming years.

How can someone cramp after 8.1 overs that too in England and further in a rain interrupted match where he had ample time to rest and hydrate. The medical team really needs to investigate. Ok so I work and get two days week off and approx a month annual leave. Rest all days I have to work. Now these players their job is to workout and practice cricket. Make strategy against each team and play and practice accordingly. Can our cricket team players and management answer how many days throughout the year they practice, workout and make strategies.....its obvious from their game....we get answers....

Pakistan should have just played to maintain a respectable scoreline to their defeat against India yesterday. At least with this kind of a plan they could have scored more runs and maybe even gotten closer to a win.
I don't know what kind of planning do Pakistani players and coaching staff do prior to the start of an innings in a dressing room; they seem to always come out with having no plan at all.

I somehow liked wahab. Everytime he bowled I actually didn't want Indian batsmen to hit him.. I neither wanted them to get out too... :) Wahab, kamran, Yunis are some of my favorites in Pakistan... He has potential but his run up and delivery needs tuning... Plus he needs some good diet to keep fitness...

Its time PCB must look into bringing players from all four provinces . I m sure there are more better talented players out there. PCB must start camps in interior sind , tribal belts in balochistan , tribal belts in KPK , interior punjab than just getting players from lahore , karachi , islamabad or peshawar. Hope that will at least get new talent to perform better than the ones we have .

Make Wasim bhai as Pakistan coach. He got immense talent. I dont understand why PCB is not approaching greats like Javed bhai, wasim bhai or waqar bhai. When both Wasim bhai and Waqar bhai were involved in IPL, Indian bowlers improved immensely. Even in recently concluded IPL, Jaydev Unadkat credited Wasim bhai's presence in KKR helped him. Shami also improved under Wasim bhai. Bhuvaneshwar Kumar was helped by Waqar bhai. Whatever article I open regarding India Pakistan match yesterday, both Indian and Pakistani fans describe this one of the most boring match in history of Ind-Pak rivalry. Even I was disappointed.

A lot of people here are commenting that Pakistan has a weaker bowling unit. I do not agree. Given the conditions they had superior bowling resources available at their hand. In fact they had scuffled India until two catches were dropped of Yuvi and Kohli. Here is my take on Pak's match against India 1)Bad team selection. Junaid Khan should have been played instead of the ever expensive Wahab Riaz. With two part time spinners in Malik and Hafeez they should have gone with only one spinner Shadab or Imad and instead played Ashraf/Fakar Zaman 2)Bad planning ... Under conducive bowling conditions with the new ball, they should have never opened with Imad specially when you know your opposition are strong players of spin. Assuming your Plan-A failed with Imad ... they should have shifted back to Hassan Ali after one or two overs, but instead persisted with him for 6 overs. So there was no Plan-B 3) Pathetic fielding: Catches win matches and you guys dropped two prolific batsmen.

Why do we keep bringing him back. It's time to move on and we should be looking at new natural talent rather keep working on tried and tested. I feel for the guy as the whole world is talking about his inconsistent performance. Having said, he should hang up his boots, perhaps big cricket is just not for him like it was not for M. Sami. Both highly rated but something not right about them. Not only bowlers, there have been a few batsmen in the past who were not right for big cricket. I would imagine it's more of personal attribute than just skill. It's about carrying yourself at that level. Talent itself is not enough. I think PCB need to incorporate human development area with their academy.

Don't throw the bullet on one or two shoulder. He is a fast bowlers and was supposed to bowl with Amir. It's duty of captain when to use and how. Imad bowled last over. May be, Pakistanis doesn't know the power hitting of Hardik Pandya who can hit big sixes and Imad was lucky to not get 4th six which was a miss.
Some is blaming coach others are Captain and rest on wahab who is a gully cricketers now but was considered best when he bowled to Watson.You need to back and support in tough time. India have Ishant Sharma but you can't play him all matches. It's Management who needs to understand not bowlers.
Also, ex players should stop giving there own example. Let others to speak. I have never seen any Indian players saying..see I had done this and that.. in fact no one across globe is doing.being Indian, I saw YouTube clips of Pak media. Afridi is painful,yohanna citing own great example, amir Sohail saying more about what he did great, mohsin talking about his own coaching style.

In fact Wahab Riaz was not fully fit even before the start of the play yesterday. Selectors made a big blunder by including him in the playing eleven. Now his fitness problems has worsened and will take more time for his 100% recovery

Wahab Riaz continues to thrive on a total number of four spells in all of his career; one against India and then against Australia in Champions trophy; and two against England in the last two test series. He is erratic, uncanny, and hopeless in ODI's. He has become a liability and better be discarded to make way for some youngster.

It is sad to hear comments about Wahab on this forum, many of them seem to be relieved that he is injured. Let us not say that, getting injured is painful and no one likes that, including all of us much less a professional athlete. Let us analyse a players performance and speak our opinion, but let us not personalize this.
Wahab is a stellar bowler, his spell to Watson in Australia was such a treat. It may be that his pace compensates for his accuracy. That begs the question how he should be used - for wickets rather than containment, and if his recent performances have not been up-to scratch AND he has been suitably used in that period, given his strengths, then we should opine for his exclusion. But let us not wish him injury or thank the almighty that he incurred an injury, that to me is just so wrong.

While performance of Wahab is well below the required level and he should not have been picked for the champions trophy in the first place, there has to be an investigation about the role of the bowling coaches. IT seems that the coaches have made no improvement in any of the bowlers but infact they have led to deterioration in the overall performance of the fast bowlers over the last few years. Come to think and it seems that the bowlers were better off without a bowling coach!
