LARKANA, Aug 3: Sindh People’s Hari Committee activists took out a procession here on Sunday to protest against construction of the greater Thal canal.

The protestors were carrying banners and placards and raised slogans against the canal construction.

Ghualm Kori, Hakim Ali Shaikh and Wahid Bux Bhayo led the procession that emerged from the Kennedy Market and after marching through the main roads terminated at the Pakistan Chowk where the protesters staged a sit-in.

Speaking on the occasion, Hari committee leaders said fertile land of the province would be rendered barren if the Thal canal was constructed. They said the main object of the canal construction was to irrigate lands of generals.

They demanded that the government should shelve the disputed project against which the Sindh Assembly had unanimously adopted a resolution.

Sewerage line collapses: The main sewerage line of the city leaked at two points on the Bakrani Road on Sunday evening, inundating the road with sewage water.

The road was blocked following the collapse of the pipeline and the traffic was diverted to an overhead bridge.

Shopkeepers of vegetable and fish markets closed their shops as the civic agency concerned failed to drain out filthy water standing there for the last two weeks.

The municipal administration had recently repaired a caved in portion of the pipeline which was damaged during the recent rains.

When contacted, Larkana Taluka Nazim Nazir Shaikh told this correspondent that the pipeline was 30 years old and it needed to be replaced. He said the government should release funds for the purpose.
