KARACHI: As the news about the death of a young man in an accident in Boat Basin went viral on social media last week, police on Friday said that they had arrested the alleged errant driver, son of a former provincial secretary, on the spot and seized the car, rejecting the rumours being circulated that a son of a feudal lord and politician was involved in it.

The young man, Sikander Mumtaz, was killed when a car hit him in Clifton within the remit of the Boat Basin police station on Sunday night.

“The suspect driving the car, Asif Sikander, was arrested from the spot by the Boat Basin police,” said Karachi South Zone DIG Azad Khan.

The FIR was registered on the same date.

The senior officer recalled that at the crime scene, the crowd wanted to get hold of the suspected driver in order to beat him and damage the car; however, the police prevented them.

The vehicle, which is at present standing in the police station, is in the name of one Maqsood Ahmed.

The DIG South explained that a video being circulated on social media was of the next day of the accident when the vehicle was being taken to the police station from the site of the accident. He revealed that the accused driver was a son of a former secretary of local government.
