Four people, including two women and a child, were injured on Saturday night when Indian border troops opened fire along the Line of Control (LoC) in Nakyal sector, said Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

"Indian troops committed ceasefire violation and targeted civilians with mortars," said a statement by the ISPR.

Barkat Begum, Ihsan Naseer, Farzana Kausar, and Naseer Ahmad were injured as the result of Indian shelling.

All four belonged to the same family, officials told Dawn. The causalities occurred in Dharoti Mohra village in Nakyal sector of Kotli district, they added.

"One shell landed on a house at about 8 pm, injuring four family members," said Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kotli Chaudhry Zulqarnain Sarfraz.

Two of the injured were shifted to Tehsil Headquarters (THQ) Hospital Nakyal and the other two were rushed to District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital Kotli due to their critical condition, added the police official.

The ISPR said that Pakistani troops effectively responded to Indian shelling. The exchange of fire took place after a break of three weeks.

The latest incident of cross-border firing comes days after Indian authorities alleged that Pakistani soldiers had killed two members of an Indian army patrol on LoC and mutilated their bodies, a claim repeatedly refuted by Pakistani authorities.

On April 17, four persons were injured in Khuiratta sector of Kotli district and Samahni sector of Bhimber district. Prior to that four persons were injured in Abbaspur sector on April 3.
