NEW DELHI: A groom in meat-strapped Uttar Pradesh walked out on the bride because her family had served only vegetarian food at the wedding, Outlook magazine reported on Friday.

Another man stepped in to accept the vegetarian repast and with it the bride, the magazine said. It did not describe the religion of the groom but it appeared to be a Muslim wedding as there was reference to the price of buffalo meat going through the roof, a factor in not serving meat.

“They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. Sometimes the opposite is also true,” Outlook said.

It quoted guests at the Muzaffarnagar as describing how they the groom refusing to solemnise his marriage “after seeing that only vegetarian dishes were being served at the wedding feast on Thursday.”

With the ceremony on the verge of a breakdown, “a guest came to the rescue and proposed marriage to the bride-in- waiting who readily accepted”, panchayat officials told the magazine.

When in Rome....Indian laws for Indians....Keep your religion out of it......

Bharatiya Australian Apr 29, 2017 09:33am

Killing innocent & harmless is inhuman. Very good gesture by keeping Vegetarian feast and even more appreciable act of the rescuer.

d.kumar. Apr 29, 2017 09:35am

What a good act by the guest. God Bless him.

Kamran Apr 29, 2017 09:36am

Incredible India

karamba Apr 29, 2017 09:39am

Shallow mentality of some people who have no concept of marriage irrespective of religion.

Where is chicken meat... or its banned too???

Bijay bhusan Meher Apr 29, 2017 09:49am

By the way I support bride. They have been so strong for last decade rejecting groom on the day of wedding. Groom should not come indecent or show silly reason.

Desh bandhu Chopra Apr 29, 2017 10:03am

Probably, the first groom was trying to hide something under the pretext.

Atticus from india Apr 29, 2017 10:08am

Correction: the groom's family created nuisance due to the menu and the bride refused to marry him. Seeing this another person propposed marriage on the spot and was accepted.

satt Apr 29, 2017 10:14am

Thank God for saving bride.A man love meat more than a woman.

VJ Apr 29, 2017 10:19am

Real fun to read the comments !!

Anusri Tripathi Apr 29, 2017 10:27am

Funny news, in India, chicken, goat, lamb meat is still available.

Balakrishnan Apr 29, 2017 10:27am

What is the meaning of such marriages, who rejects it on silly reasons.

gopi Apr 29, 2017 10:30am

wedding muhurat day meals generally doesnt contain non-veg even in traditional non-veg families. it is allowed in receptions.

bryan Apr 29, 2017 10:35am

Today I am a vegetarian, rather an eggetarian and fishitarian. It has helped me control my weight. After medical tests I was alarmed at my cholestrol. So from thereon no red meat, less oil etc. In Kuwait it is said jokingly that if you don't have diabetes you are not a Kuwaiti. The cases of cardiac arrests in Dubai is growing. Our food and lifestyles are to be blamed.

Vegetarianism is not bad. I learnt cooking too. There are many dishes in vegetarian too. Millets are amazing. It is just a starting problem and later life adjusts. Also, a bit of exercise or yoga helps a lot. I dont feel fat now as I used to feel earlier. Infact much better than five years ago and I can climb up stairs easily. At weddings I now choose a healthy diet of salads and some proteinous dal and the only indulgence is in ice cream. I am now trying to convince my family members to reduce so much meat and switch to a lighter diet. I understand how tough it is for people to make a small dietary change.

Steve Apr 29, 2017 10:36am

The bride is much better off with the new groom (hopefully) than she would have been with the original groom (OG). OG probably also expected a huge dowry. OG is not much of a man if you ask me.

gulab Apr 29, 2017 10:40am

A man who values a girl from the menu. Wow. The girl was saved.

Talha Apr 29, 2017 10:41am

The guest seized his moment just fine.

Vivek narain Apr 29, 2017 10:46am

Meat eating is insensitive,a green vegetable diet without seeds along with fruits is the most sensitive if not sensible way to survive..

Good riddance with such a groom.

@Faisal @Luke furtado what happened to secularism

read the article fully

meat was not served bec it was expensive, probably some very poor people

and the groom wanted meat, but bride family could not afford it

Abdulla Hussain Apr 29, 2017 10:53am

Every thing is possible in Modi's india.

rich Apr 29, 2017 10:54am

@Hafeez, Canada Where is chicken meat... or its banned too???

my dear even beef is freely availbe in india, just slaughter is not allowed in all states

eg maharastra u cannot slaughter cows, but u can import from other states and sell

chicken in india even mutton, beef is cheaper then pakistan

Rp Apr 29, 2017 10:54am

@Hafeez, Canada - it has nothing to do with the ban - the meat was too expensive that is why they offered only vegetarian dishes!

N Gujaranwala Apr 29, 2017 10:59am

We support meatless India. Is is proven now, that vegetarian meal is the best food for keeping good health and long life. Kindly support vegetarianism.

point of view Apr 29, 2017 11:02am

I think, it must be a dowry issue.

point of view Apr 29, 2017 11:06am

The girl must be congratulated because she was saved from a sick mentality man. The man should be taken to slaughter house, dumbed into the meat, and ask him to eat the meat as much as he can.

Mohsin Apr 29, 2017 11:10am

The bride is lucky. The groom would have made an awful husband. Hope she has a better future with the replacement.

shan kazmi Apr 29, 2017 11:13am

Well, the actual reason to refuse may have different.

Punjabi Indian Apr 29, 2017 11:18am

@Atticus from india ...Thanks for the correction . This makes the bride the real hero for refusing to marry a man who created an issue over the wedding menu .

Shahid Apr 29, 2017 11:30am

@Luke furtado The problem is this Rome keeps changing. BTW, wedding in many Romes is a solumn religious obligation which is also accompanied by the social event.

BEYONDSKY Apr 29, 2017 11:31am

What a sacrifice made by the groom! Don't worry Mister, I understand the real reasons of selflessness behind your silly pretext. To the new couple, remember this man and make your life meaningful.

Nahrad Muni Apr 29, 2017 11:31am

The new groom will eat nice meat later..

Kr Apr 29, 2017 11:31am

We always ignore Severe Health Problems, Law and Order Situation, Police Behavior, Energy Crisis ,Corruption, Expensive Justice of our home as Indian grooms rejects bride at meatless wedding...

This attitude shows that our Foreign Policy, GDP, balance of trade,Job Growth and Health facilities will flourish as more Indian grooms will reject bride for meat....

Our vision has become so narrow to prosper

yousaf jamal akhtar Apr 29, 2017 11:32am

@luke furtado,,, dont know whether you are condoning meatless parties or telling us that only hindus are indians !!!

Mr Satyabrat D Singh Apr 29, 2017 11:37am

@Faisal what you found non secular in it?

Mr Satyabrat D Singh Apr 29, 2017 11:39am

@Abdulla Hussain India belongs to Indians and Modi is one of them.

Shahid Apr 29, 2017 11:41am

@Vivek narain Most people, including minorities all over the world, want to 'live' not just 'survive'. This 'sensitivity' business is double edged sword. It cuts both ways. That is why maturity is the key for responsible societies - live and let live.

M Wasim K Apr 29, 2017 11:45am

@Mohsin Dear ! These are news headlines - There could many underlying reasons.

ABE Apr 29, 2017 12:07pm

I bet the bride had no objections...meeting of the hearts and minds is more important than 'meat'.

Eshant Gupta Apr 29, 2017 12:12pm

In Hindu weddings, keeping non-veg is offence for most, it is against Satvik philosophy and practices that is simple life with least damage to mother earth and nature.

Sonu Apr 29, 2017 12:12pm

If a guy can reject wife for food then he can divorce wife anytime for any reason.

Sympathiser Apr 29, 2017 12:24pm

@bryan # your views are absolutely true.. I am with you as I have also experienced the same thing

Ahmed khan ahmed Apr 29, 2017 12:25pm

@Luke furtado vine is forbidden in Pakistan according to the law of land and Relegion BUT for the sake of NON-MUSLIMS they have been given permition to trade and drink vine, shampane etc. Having said that why to interfere with the peoples choice of eating and drinking and interfering in their beliefs.

PPP Apr 29, 2017 12:31pm

@Sonu comment of the day for this man food is impotent then relation in other way its good that his nature exposed early other wise sooner or later he would create uneasy situation for even smaller thing after marriage.

@Bharatiya Australian so why you kill innocent plants to eat them. Plants do have life dear.

M Wasim K Apr 29, 2017 01:12pm

@N Gujaranwala sorry Sir, people eat meat and vegetables in proportion and only vegetarian food is not a sign of good health. In fact it is a sign of depression for keeping yourself away from good food in life allowed by your Creator

IsaBhai Surat wala Apr 29, 2017 01:35pm

Law of the land...... To be strictness.....

lafanga Apr 29, 2017 02:21pm

@Bharatiya Australian Vegetarian concept is invalid if you look at it. If you don't kill the domesticated animals like cattle, goats, lamb and chicken for food then they will multiply to huge numbers within a few years and compete with humans for the same vegetarian food that we want to consume to spare their lives.

God created humans to be at top of the food chain. Be good humans and consume meat and all the vegetarian food available to us without any greed. Be humble and look after those who are less fortunate and praise the Creator for providing us with abundant food. This is the true message.

Ashwin Apr 29, 2017 02:32pm

@AHMED KHAN AHMED Yes, plants have life but they can't feel pain. Just like we don't feel pain when we cut our hair or nails. You must have seen gardner pruning plants, by doing this, plants don't get hurt, instead they become healthier, shiny and vibrant.

Human and Animals have nerves all over the body which are finally connected with brain. When something hurts our body, the nerves send this message to the brain, which results in the feeling of pain. But our hair and nails don't consist nerves, hence you don't feel any pain when you cut them. Some sea fish and lobsters also don't feel pain because they don't have such system.

Indian Apr 29, 2017 02:33pm

@Kamran Yes, it's a good sign that the bride did not give in, there was a gentleman who proposed to her immediately, and the families accepted the match. Jai Hind.

Indian Apr 29, 2017 02:36pm

@Faisal there are Hindus who consume beef and the price rise of other meats has affected them too.

Indian Apr 29, 2017 02:38pm

@Ahmed khan ahmed they lack a central nervous system. Seriously, that's 7th standard science.

J Jindal Apr 29, 2017 02:47pm

I am Hindu. This meat ban of cows or buffaloes in UP or anywhere else is utterly stupid imo.

MG Apr 29, 2017 02:50pm

Girl is very luck as the groom has shown his real face right in time.

Sachin Apr 29, 2017 03:05pm

@Abdulla Hussain any common sense used in your comment?

Nasir London Apr 29, 2017 03:07pm

Useless arguments expressed in most comments, eat meat or do not eat is a personal choice. The good news is that the bride accepted alternative proposal and got married. Isn't that great?

TechScribe Apr 29, 2017 03:35pm

In Muslim weddings in South India they only serve mutton and Chicken as most of them have Hindu friends and they don't eat beef. It's funny that this guy used the pretext of meat to flee from his wedding. It's obvious he didn't love the girl enough and it's good that he walked away.

Hasmukh dave Apr 29, 2017 03:35pm

@Hafeez, Canada Vegetarian food is cheaper than non- vegetarian.

Raccoon Apr 29, 2017 03:36pm

@Anusri Tripathi Beef too is readily available, welcome to Kerala.

TechScribe Apr 29, 2017 03:40pm

On second thoughts I think this was an excuse.

RAVI Apr 29, 2017 03:55pm

@Hafeez, Canada cost of chicken meat is relatively high and it was an average family wedding

Zak Apr 29, 2017 03:56pm

Bride is not a chattel but a human being. Women should be shown more respect in india.

Zak Apr 29, 2017 03:57pm

Jag Apr 29, 2017 04:01pm

I attended a Muslim family wedding. In the end some of the grooms family made a big fuss about not serving ice cream from certain store(ice cream was served from different place than preferred ) hence they rejected the wedding. Got divorce with in a month. I am not kiddin

Miqbal rangoonwLa Apr 29, 2017 04:02pm

You see the real face of greedy man for meat he is greedy for meat what else you could expect from this committed corrupt criminal refusing bride at last moment

Batman Apr 29, 2017 04:30pm

@Faisal look who is talking about secularism, what about your country?

Muhammad Apr 29, 2017 04:33pm

Thats utterly stupid and disgusting. Why cancel a wedding on food?! Poor girl, she got rejected for this and had to accept a bystander as her groom. nobody cared about what she thinks and wants. We south asians have failed our women once again

Batman Apr 29, 2017 04:37pm

@Zak I think you are the one and only one most intelligent human in the world.

Bharariya Australian Apr 29, 2017 04:48pm

@Ahmed khan ahmed ... not an unexpected question. My any number of explanation/logic will not stop you from killing an innocent animal. So why should I bother? But if you are genuinely eager to your question, you are intelligent enough to research this yourself.

Tariq, Lahore Apr 29, 2017 04:53pm

Pity the groom, who had no patience for the meat, later.

Nepali Apr 29, 2017 05:48pm

Portion of Nepalese population (of Indian origin) who live in the border area of UP have brought those bad traditions with them. They ask for hefty dowry from bride's family even when they are doctors and engineers.

Mohammad Apr 29, 2017 06:34pm

The other guy got a free wedding, smart :)

KAbira Apr 29, 2017 06:37pm

@Zak. Any thoughts on honour killings?

Desh bandhu Chopra Apr 29, 2017 06:48pm

@bryan In fact, a vegetarian enjoys a better health. I am totally vegetarian for the past 25 years and at 65 now, I have no medical problems to complain of. My favourite dishes are rice and curry, rice and rajmah with curd. On sundays, I prefer a breakfast of aaloo-parathas and curd laced with lots of black pepper. However, I eat only two times a day, winter or summer.

The end is near Apr 29, 2017 06:52pm

Meatless wedding is disrespectful for groom And all wedding guests And groom's family. The groom took the right decision. You cannot expect groom and all Baratis to be eating salad and carrots on wedding day.

Sandip Apr 29, 2017 07:08pm

@Bharatiya Australian
What about plants? Don't they have life too? Hypocracy

val Apr 29, 2017 07:18pm

@The end is near Did Groom went there to eat or marry? You should have your priorities right? Also, as per your statement, Veg food is all about carrots..LOL

The end is near Apr 29, 2017 07:52pm

@val Even if you are vegetarian but meat must still be available in the wedding menu. Its totally disgusting and disrespectful not to think about other wedding guests who want to eat meat in wedding they are invited to. But meat is Not there. All these things count and are essential part of wedding ceremony beside groom and bride.

Silent Apr 29, 2017 08:03pm

@Ahmed khan ahmed yes they do. But this is not a valid argument. Ever imagined the amount of plants needed to produce 1kg of any meat? So which diet kills lesser plants? Veg or non-veg?

Nownow Apr 29, 2017 08:07pm

Best of wishes for the newly wed couple.

Nasir London Apr 29, 2017 08:45pm

Eat to survive & live...not live to Eat..tough lesson taught to groom and his relatives..!!.. after demonetisation , there is cap on wedding expenses to curb the world famous " Big fat Indian weddings" which wastes crores of rupees on single occassion meaninglessly..!!..any way bride got glimse of stubborn Groom before its too late and escaped from triple talaq..all is good, when ends up right..!!

Yash Apr 29, 2017 09:10pm

@Ahmed khan ahmed . please note no one asked the family NOT to serve non- veg food. May be the family couldn't afford non-veg food. The boy's family should have realised and not turn down the wedding. Eating animals all the time makes one behave like animals. This was the typical example.

Yankee Cricket Fan Apr 30, 2017 04:30pm

So the original groom, who I am sure had been thoroughly checked out, and whose family was also a good match for the brides family was not acceptable over something very small, but a guest who the family hadn't checked out or whose marriage was not at least discussed ahead of time, was acceptable on a whim? I hope the family is not regretting their impulse decision after the fact.

God has given us meat and vegetables to eat and system yo digest them so that you can consume in moderation.

I think the girl was saved by her lucky stars from getting married into a nasty family. If that family makes such a big fuss about food, a trivial matter, then what else would they do to the girl in the future - just leaves to the imagination!!

Kevin Apr 30, 2017 08:13pm

So funny the way this report appears here. In India, the bride refused to marry the groom for throwing a tantrum and chose to marry another man who was willing to seek her in marriage for her stand.

Maya Apr 30, 2017 08:31pm

@rich yes, low quality stuff is usually cheaper!

Imran Apr 30, 2017 08:54pm

Good Job Groom, The bride's family did not communicate about the change in menu. This shows mentality of bride's family and the reflection on her that she will fall short in marriage communication.

Imran Apr 30, 2017 08:57pm

@bryan i am glad it is working for you. Stay vegetarian, all you guys who are on vegetarian bandwagon I really respect you. It means cheaper meat for non-vegetarians. Imagine if everyone one was a meat eater, we will run out of meat to eat.

M Apr 30, 2017 09:01pm

Religion based politics imposing sanctions.

Imran Apr 30, 2017 09:28pm

Why do vegetarians have to force their un-nautral eating habits on other people. If you guys eat veggies its fine and dandy for me. And cheaper meat for me. I have my theory, people in India don't eat meat because vegetables are healthy, its because they can't afford the meat. Over the period of time they forget the taste of meat and then are not able to cook and eat meat. Thats why indian meat dishes are so nasty. You need to know meat to cook meat. Its like cats who are fed cat food for years don't get exited when a real piece of meat is placed in front of them. Same thing with Sari. Sari is the cheapest form of clothing, its a clothing sheet that's wrapped around without the need of stitching. Over the period of time Sari became gaudy and accepted and the rich and famous added bling bling to it. Indian diet is unhealthy, you kill your veggies by over-cooking. Eating healthy food comes from other parts of the world. Due to un-hygene you gotta cook veggies to death.

Visitor Apr 30, 2017 09:59pm

@Hafeez, Canada if vegetarian is served, maybe it is due to their affordability. Fellows who support this walkout directly ir covertly are disgraceful. May god bless the person who came forward to accept the bride and may the pair live happily.
