PML-N MNA Marvi Memon has been appointed to the World Bank's Advisory Council on Gender and Development, Radio Pakistan reported.

Marvi Memon, who is in Washington attending an annual meeting convened between the World Bank and International Monetary Fund, expressed her gratitude over her new position, calling it an honour for her and Pakistan.

She briefed the meeting in Washington about the Benazir Income Support Program (BISP), of which she is the chairperson.

Memon urged the World Bank and its partners working in Pakistan to rely on Pakistan's National Data Registry compiled by BISP during the course of their development work.

Speaking at the conference, Memon vowed to continue fighting for women's empowerment and poverty alleviation across the world.

Memon, a former banker and entrepreneur joined the 13th National Assembly on a PML-Q ticket. By 2012, she had joined the PML-N.

She is known for taking a populist stance on national issues and is also recognised as a vocal campaigner for human rights. She was also outspoken in her support for contract employees belonging to certain government sectors whose services were not being regularised.

One of Memon's landmark achievements in Parliament has been her legislative work on the crime of acid attacks.

Legislator Marvi Memon tabled the the Criminal Law Amendment Bill, 2011, along with Begum Shahnaz Sheikh and Advocate Anusha Rehman.

According to the bill, a maximum sentence of life imprisonment and a minimum sentence of 14 years with a fine of Rs1 million can be handed to anyone found guilty of having committed an acid attack.

According to the Free and Fair Election Network, Memon authored the third highest number of private members' bill in the 13th National Assembly.
