Shahrukh stuns Shahid Afridi

ISLAMABAD, July 30: Shahrukh Niazi sprang a big surprise on Wednesday in the under-19 trials being held to pick two players for Davis Cup camp, by beating junior national hardcourt champion Shahid Afridi.

Losing finalist to Omer Babar in the National Junior Invitational Tournament this week, Shahrukh stunned Shahid 6-3, 7-6 (4) in a match that lasted two hours and 45 minutes.

In another match, Akbar Pataudi defeated Babar Ali 6-1, 6-0 to lead Group B with two wins, having beaten Shahrukh on the opening day.

Wasif Cheema scored a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Tanveer Ashiq while Muteeb Pasha outplayed Munir Ashiq 6-2, 6-4, both players being the front-runners in Group A.

The trials that are being held at the PTF Complex will continue for another two days.

Results: Akbar Pataudi bt Babar Ali 6-1, 6-0; Shahrukh Niazi bt Shahid Afridi 6-3, 7-6 (4); Wasif Cheema bt Tanvir Ashiq 6-1, 6-1; Muteeb Pasha bt Munir Ashiq 6-2, 6-4.
