Adviser to Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz on Monday reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment to peace in Afghanistan during talks with United States (US) National Security Adviser Lt Gen H.R. McMaster.

The US adviser's visit to Pakistan is part of his tour of the region for assessing the situation in Afghanistan.

"Conveying Pakistan’s concerns over the deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan, the adviser reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to work with the international community to support efforts for peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan," a press release issued by the foreign office said.

During the discussion, Aziz highlighted the importance of effective border management for achieving peace in the region, the statement said.

He added that the "strong partnership" between Pakistan and the US is "critical to promoting and sustaining peace and stability in the wider region," a press release said.

Aziz highlighted the policies pursued by the government that have improved security in the country and led to an economic turnaround.

He said that Pakistan was committed to fighting terrorism as part of the National Action Plan as he highlighted the gains made so far, the press release said.

The PM's adviser highlighted the plight of the people of India-held Kashmir and the steps taken by Pakistan to reach out to India and Afghanistan on the matter.

The US adviser appreciated Pakistan's efforts in the fight against terrorism and renewed the commitment of the new administration to work closely with Pakistan in strengthening mutually beneficial relations.

General McMaster said the US would work with Pakistan towards the "shared objectives of peace and stability in Afghanistan and the region."
