KARACHI: A suspected gangster was shot dead in an ‘encounter’ late on Friday night in Lyari’s Kalakot area, police said.

They added that the area police acting on a tip-off conducted a targeted raid in Nawalane where they came under attack. In an ensuing encounter, one suspect later identified as Ghulam Nabi alias Gull was killed.

The police claimed to have seized a TT pistol and a hand grenade from his custody.

The deceased was associated with the Uzair Baloch-led Lyari gang, the police said. The ring leader, Uzair Baloch, has been in the custody of the law enforcement agencies over charges of spying.

“Ghulam Nabi was involved in several murder cases,” said City SSP Adeel Hussain Chandio. “He looked after drug business in Lyari,” the officer added.

Man murdered over ‘love marriage’

A man was stabbed to death and his wife injured allegedly by her estranged brother in the name of ‘honour’ a year after their marriage, police said.

Mohammad Azam, 28, and his wife, Sumiya, 28, were attacked at their home in a shantytown in the early hours of Saturday, the Gulshan-i-Maymar police added.

The woman’s brother, Abdullah, who had arrived at their home some days ago and told the couple that he wanted to take her back to their home town in Punjab for a patch-up, attacked Azam at around 3.30am. As Sumiya tried to save her husband, the suspect also injured her before fleeing.

The victims were shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where Azam was pronounced dead on arrival. Later, the injured woman, a mother of a minor son, was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for further treatment. She sustained injuries on her abdomen and hands, the police said.
