QUETTA: Afzal Butt and Ayub Jan Sirhindi were elected president and general secretary respectively of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) on Monday.

The PFUJ also elected a 25-member federal executive council for 2017-18 during its biennial delegates meeting (BDM) in Quetta.

Over 500 journalists took part in the BDM. A total of 249 votes, out of 293 registered, were cast in the election.

Afzal Butt clinched 182 votes while his opponent Kashif Hussain could secure only 61.

Ayub Jan Sirhindi of the Karachi Union of Journalists secured 143 votes for the general secretary slot while his opponent Shamsul Islam Naz got 102.

The PFUJ also elected four vice presidents — Saleem Shahid, Bakhtzada Yousafzai, Khalid Khokhar and Muhammad Amin Abbasi.
