Buyouts, mergers and quick exits — as India's richest man shakes up the country's ultra-competitive mobile market, telecommunications companies are scrambling to either consolidate or cut their losses and run.

Norwegian multinational Telenor recently became the latest to quit India and analysts expect other brands will disappear as intense price wars sparked by tycoon Mukesh Ambani mean thinning profit margins.

“Most of the smaller players will find it difficult to grow by themselves and will be looking for exit options,” Bhasker Canagaradjou, head of research at Ipsos Business Consulting in Mumbai, told AFP.

India's multi-billion dollar telecoms sector had a dozen companies battling for customers as recently as 2010. Now, there is around half that number and industry watchers say soon there will be only four.

The race to consolidate has hastened since Ambani sent shock waves through the sector in September when he launched Reliance Jio's 4G network with a free service for the rest of 2016 that was later extended to April.

The audacious offer was followed by vastly cheaper data plans and free voice calls for life, forcing rattled competitors to slash their own tariffs to maintain market share while also seeking extra investment.

India's telecoms sector, which global research firm International Data Corporation estimates will have market revenue of $37 billion this year, has long been a risky and costly endeavour for companies.

Network operators have to overcome regulatory difficulties to purchase expensive wireless spectrum to provide services that are often plagued by dodgy reception, frequent call drops and fluctuating internet speeds.

Aggressive Jio

But Jio's arrival has added a new dimension as major players, including Vodafone and Idea, explore tie-ups to match the deep pockets of the Reliance Industries-backed telecoms company, while others are being forced to call it a day.

Telenor announced in late February that market leader Bharti Airtel would acquire its Indian operations, saying the amount of investment needed to compete in the crowded sector would not offer a worthwhile level of return.

The withdrawal came after Videocon Telecom told subscribers in January that it planned to cease operations and pull out of the market. Aircel and Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) have sold up since the beginning of 2016.

Jio signed up 100 million users in its first six months and wants to lead the market with a 50 per cent share by 2021, eyeing Airtel's status as India's largest telecoms provider.

Airtel's deal with Telenor will see it boost its own subscriber numbers by around 40 million and greatly enhance its spectrum coverage as it battles to fend off Jio's ambitious target.

“(The Telenor-Airtel agreement) is the latest sign that the entry of aggressive new operator Reliance Jio is spurring incumbents to consolidate to better meet the intense competition and weaker telcos to exit altogether,” Fitch Ratings said.

Airtel's position is also under threat from British mobile phone behemoth Vodafone and Mumbai-based Idea Cellular. Vodafone announced in January that it was in talks to merge its Indian unit with Idea in their own response to Jio.

Global brokerage firm CLSA estimates that the pair would command a revenue market share of 43 per cent by the start of the 2019-20 financial year, ahead of Airtel on 33 per cent, if they combined. Jio would have 13 per cent.

Profit slump

Reliance Communications (Rel Comm) — owned by Ambani's younger brother Anil Ambani — has been responsible for much of the consolidation at the lower end of the market.

Rel Comm announced that Aircel was merging with it around a fortnight after Jio's launch. It had already purchased Russian conglomerate Sistema's Indian telecoms business, branded MTS, earlier in 2016 and is now reportedly in talks with Tata Group's loss-making teleservices unit to join forces.

Indian telecoms analyst Baburajan Kizhakedath told AFP he expected the Tata Docomo brand to disappear altogether while recent Indian newspaper reports have said that the loss-making state operators BSNL and MTNL are in talks to merge.

“The ongoing consolidation is likely to leave four larger operators — Bharti, Jio, the combination of Vodafone India and Idea Cellular, and the combined Reliance Communications and Aircel Limited,” said Fitch.

Jio's free services eroded the profitability of its rivals in the recent quarter with Airtel reporting a 55 per cent slump in on-year quarterly net profits and Reliance Communications announcing an almost 15 per cent slide.

They are hopeful that an end to Jio's free subscriptions on April 1 will provide some respite, but analysts warn that current pricing levels are unsustainable and companies may have to endure significant losses in the short term.

“(The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) has already warned the government about the possible risk of payment defaults by the telecom companies if these freebies and price war continues for a long time,” said Canagaradjou.

Monopoly?

saudagar Mar 15, 2017 12:23pm

mukesh plans to bring smart phone under 1000 inr by 2017 end , digital india in making !

FRANKENSTEIN Mar 15, 2017 12:24pm

This is where we need to learn from India. I really appreciate TATA and other companies like Reliance. TATA is exporting automobiles to different parts. On the other hand we are importing cars from Japan and our local assembly lines are producing only junk for high prices. Then we are happy to give everything to China

K SHESHU BABU Mar 15, 2017 12:23pm

The Telecom business is moving towards Monopoly and one player is demolishing the aspirations of smaller competitors. The tycoon happens to be a closer friend of the rulers and his influence might still grow in the future making competition difficult

AHa Mar 15, 2017 12:27pm

Two factors Number one economies of the scale and number two operational efficiencies. Indian companies master in both. I live I Australia and here price for everything is 3 times and key reason is excessive overheads that bring down efficiencies

mandy Mar 15, 2017 12:27pm

He is not just India's richest but Asia's 3rd richest and world's 36th richest person.

Zakir hussain Mar 15, 2017 12:41pm

After shaking telecom industry mukesh ambani is now starting jio dth service and jio cab services

Saif Zulfiqar Mar 15, 2017 12:50pm

Not good for small investors and Indian market. Nobody will touch this rich Gujrati because he is very good friend Modi since decades.

Alam Mar 15, 2017 01:01pm

He is basically from Sindh, left his homeland during partition .

Maxx Mar 15, 2017 01:02pm

@mandy He is India's richest at the cost of millions of poor Indians, according to a latest survey India ranks number two in the world in unequal distribution of wealth.

No difference between local conglomerate turned into a cartel/monopoly or the International capitalist cartels operating in Asian countries.

He has build the most expensive home in Mumbai worth more than a billion USD, overlooking the slums and poor residences with some good blocks. Could have been more pluralistic than accumulating money.

Shoaib, azmer Mar 15, 2017 01:03pm

100 million customers by 6 months and by only one Indian operator ie jio.I am curious to know the number of total customers in Pakistan.

south Asia Mar 15, 2017 01:10pm

@Alam Ambahi family hails from Chorvad Gujarat. Don' go for the name AmbaNI, it only sounds sindhi.

madhusudan Mar 15, 2017 01:07pm

@Alam he is gujrati, not sindhi.

SID Mar 15, 2017 01:13pm

@Alam Late Dhirubhai Ambani , father of Mukesh Ambani was born in the village of Chorwad in the district of Junagarh , Gujarat in 1932. He father was a school teacher. How he became Sindhi & left homeland during partition ?

SID Mar 15, 2017 01:13pm

@MUHAMMAD FAHEEM KHAN It's not monopoly. Its consolidation . How can there be monopoly when there are 4 equal players ??

Gaurav Arya Mar 15, 2017 01:22pm

@Alam Ambani is Gujarati, not Sindhi. But yes, Armani the famous fashion designer, is surely Sindhi.

gaurav Mar 15, 2017 01:58pm

a company like airtel which provided 1 gb data for 250 rupees is providing 30 gb data with free calls and free sms for 345 rupees....jio is like a god for us ...

Shahzad S Iqbal Mar 15, 2017 02:01pm

I wonder why rich Pakistani entrepreneurs don't think "out of the box"? It seem they only stick to 19th / 20th century industries & approaches....i.e. placing children in all key roles, sticking to old industries like cement, sugar, textiles, cars, financial institutions, shopping malls etc....Where is innovation? Where is competitiveness?

SID Mar 15, 2017 02:06pm

@Maxx He also made millions of middle class Indian rich who are stakeholder of Reliance company .

NURUL HUDA Mar 15, 2017 02:15pm

I am both Idea cellular & Vodafone user. I spend INR348 for a month to get 28GB( 1GB/day) 3-4G along with Free unlimited local-STD calls to any network. Sometimes i am confusing to decide whether i should talk or surfing internet. Such types of competition might hurt business but middle class people like me get huge benefits, i almost saving 2/3 what i used to spend before.

Rahul Mar 15, 2017 02:16pm

Pakistani need to learn economics and wealth management. 1st Monopoly is there when there is no competitor. In India we have Airtel, Vodafone, Reliance and BSNL as big telecom market.

2nd People who work should be rewarded.. He is billionaire nor by gift, but his smart work and dedication. Not to forget he gave India cheap telecom cost, world largest refineries, petro-chemical and many more. Not to forget; Employment. If you dnt get reward people would not work.

MOHAMMAD IQBAL Mar 15, 2017 02:20pm

37 billion dollars telecom revenue equal to the dole china giving for CPEC. What a wild comparision.

Desi Dimag Mar 15, 2017 02:20pm

The campaign starts for 2019 election.

Saif zulfiqar Mar 15, 2017 02:25pm

@Alam, Mukesh Ambani is not from Sind. He was born in Aden, Yemen on 18 April, 1957. His farther Dhirubai was working in Aden. He shifted to Bombay in 1958.

M.Saeed Mar 15, 2017 02:27pm

@mandy: That proves him being selfish exploiter of the poor masses of the world's largest democracy and 2nd most populous nation on the planet. What a blatant heap of controversies!

Taimoor khan Mar 15, 2017 02:36pm

If one actually read the article , the forigen telecom companies are actually running away from India. How would that effect the FDI?

Maxx Mar 15, 2017 02:53pm

@SID Some 45,000 not-for-profit organisations flourish across Pakistan, making life a little less unbearable for millions.

we (Pakistan) are placed fourth in the world for the amount we give to charity as a percentage of our per capita income.

M.Saeed Mar 15, 2017 03:23pm

@SID: Junagarh, now a district of Gujarat was a part of Pakistan and Shahnawaz Bhutto, (father of former PM of Pakistan,Z.A.Bhutto) was its PM (Dewan) till 1948, when majority Hindu population state was agreed to be merged with Gujarat, India, following the results of a free and fair plebiscite. The blatant disregard and headstrongness of India in forceful annexation of Kashmir is the point to note.

Umesh Tiwari Mar 15, 2017 03:49pm

@Taimoor khan There is only big telecom company in India - Vodafone. And Idea cellular is merging with Vodafone India. Vodafone is not at all exiting. Its only small players like telenor is exiting.

Tan Mar 15, 2017 03:55pm

Jio is making Digital India dream come true with cheap mobile and free 4G internet connection through out the country and in rural areas as well.

SID Mar 15, 2017 04:12pm

@Taimoor khan : Vodafone is part of Vodafone PLC . SingTel ( Singapore) has 30% stake in Airtel. Maxis communication ( Malaysia) has 74% stake in Aircel. Still need data on FDI in Indian telecom sector ??

SID Mar 15, 2017 04:17pm

@MOHAMMAD IQBAL For your information Mukesh Ambani has invested $25 billion in start Reliance JIO operation in last 4 years . Investing $25 billion before commercial operation ....gigantic.

SID Mar 15, 2017 04:26pm

@Saif Zulfiqar Being small player doesn't give right to exploit customer. Open market is competitive for everyone . 2 years ago 1 GB 3G datapack came at a price INR 150 .

With JIO , price has come down to INR 330 for 30 GB data with voice call free for lifetime ( 4G network, average speed 7-8mbps) . Ultimately customer benefit from it.

SID Mar 15, 2017 04:25pm

@K SHESHU BABU Then why they are getting slapped by millions of dollars fines by Petroleum ministry under Modi Govt ( KG basin gas issue) ??

Leo Mar 15, 2017 04:32pm

He is a classic example of self centered south east Asian. He built a 26 floor "home" in the middle Mumbai . His "house" stands tall amongst the biggest slum of the continent. This kind of price war is not sustainable for the "honest" and "quality" companies. His brother started the infocom company with a third class service to its customers who are still going through "poor network "issue after 15 years of launch. This group is infamous for "placing ears" inside the Prime Minister's Office to get hold of policy decisions. In a huge country like India, you can make big money by giving third class quality at a cheap price. If you wanna complain, there is nowhere to go!

Observer Mar 15, 2017 04:33pm

@SID it is called cartel. We have this situation in Canada where Bell, Rogers,Telus and fido the major telecom players dictate prices. Eventually cartels maintain price control and hurt the interests of consumers. Another example is oil cartel. These countries manipulate oil prices by increasing or decreasing oil prices.

Leo Mar 15, 2017 04:30pm

@M.Saeed : I agree with you!

SID Mar 15, 2017 04:42pm

@Maxx Coming to number of NGO , India has more than 31,00,000 listed NGO .

And charity , India is is ranked 7th country charitable giving by individuals as a % of GDP .

Himi Mar 15, 2017 04:48pm

@mandy and @M.Saeed ........... So basically you mean that people should stop working hard day in, day out and stop getting rich because some guys will get offended by how much you earn. Why don't you become capable enough instead of badmouthing others??

SID Mar 15, 2017 04:51pm

@Leo First it was Essar not Reliance on snooping issue. Second, whenever there is network issue, there is always alternate player in the market . With MNP one can switch to any network within 7 working days.

And please do some search on google about largest slum . Last time it showed somewhere in Karachi.

sodawaterbottleopenerwala Mar 15, 2017 04:50pm

@Himi; if capable , then would they have commented ? leave behind ,modi has taken us ahead ,just ignore ,soon we will stop hearing them as distance increases and they LAG behind ....

SID Mar 15, 2017 04:54pm

@Human first Its Jamnagar . Largest refinery in the world.

SID Mar 15, 2017 04:58pm

@Observer In India , market is huge . Only second after China. There is always scope for 3-4 players who can function independently . Plus Govt agency ( TRAI) is very robust. They actively monitor the complaint from customer..be it call drop, tariff issues etc.

ASIF Mar 15, 2017 05:01pm

I like this guy. He knows how to make money.

Pra aksha Mar 15, 2017 05:02pm

@Taimoor khan : If one actually read the article , the forigen telecom companies are actually running away from India. How would that effect the FDI?

Do not worry be happy! India knows her business!!! Who would bring the latest, sophisticated technology, infrastructure in affordable rate would stay in competition & would prosper or else perish!

Peterson Mar 15, 2017 05:13pm

Jio's offer is unbelievable. For less than five dollars a month you can make unlimited voice calls to anywhere in India. No roaming charges and unlimited data that too 30 Gb at 4G speeds. It will be really difficult for others to survive.

bryan Mar 15, 2017 05:29pm

@MUHAMMAD FAHEEM KHAN Not monopoly -- not possible given the level of on ground investments by major players. Rather drive prices down. India still has high data charges, many parts are yet to get decent internet speed, many Indians are yet to use internet. Price is the only way to get them. Shaking up an industry is extremely good. The next big wave is in automobile in India. Toyota+Suzuki, Tata+ VW, Mahindra+Ford. Partnerships, consolidation, cost and resource sharing are the way forward to "survive". Look forward to similar structures in Banking and Finance and Insurance too. This will pave way to seeking efficiencies without relying on government push or doles or policy changes. Private sector becomes effective managers of resources to maximise output and minimise input. The growth model in India will be different than in anywhere else. Market complexities will usher in innovation in the way business is done. Perfect example to learn. Im sure HBS will have case studies on it.

Abhimanue Mar 15, 2017 05:32pm

Mukesh ambani son of humble Dhiru Bhai ambani who start his career as a petrol attended from the age of 16 and made big business Indian empire,Reliance industries which gave jobs to so many Indian. Now came to mobile revolution before mukesh ambani entry in the mobile Business companies like airtel, idea and Vodafone have a joint monopoly where customer got 1 GB 4 G data for about 150/- rupees for 28 days. but after jio entry they have to slash their prices and these company cannot loot the money from consumer for mere 1 gb data . Now Jio offer is 28+5=33 GB data and unlimited calling inside india for 28 days in Just Rupees 303/- P.Month.

Leo Mar 15, 2017 06:32pm

@Peterson : Are you sure about 4G speed?? Its an eyewash..You can never watch a video stream without a delay!

Satyam Mar 15, 2017 06:52pm

@Taimoor khan so basically you want to say that dont Indian companies should not compete with foreign companies so that foreign companies will find the markets easy and pour in FDI. This explains the fact why Pakistan has no big companies of its own. And why a loan of around 50 billion dollars is considered FDI, you dont know tge meaning of FDI. Its investment, not loan.

Anyway, why would we need FDI when our own companies are investing $20 billion even before starting operations. No foreign company would do that.

Satyam Mar 15, 2017 06:53pm

And do you know Diru Bhai Ambani used to work at a Petrol pump and do you also know Mukesh Ambani like his family members is a vegetarian.

@Saif Zulfiqar mukash ambani father Lt.Dhiru Bhai Ambani work as a petrol pump attendent not mukesh ambani.

nikus Mar 15, 2017 08:20pm

My brother is working as Senior General Manager in Reliance. Due to crude price collapse, GRM( Gross refining margin) increased substantially and so the profit to RIL. Mukesh Ambani is doling that money to common people through Jio. Several times our telecom ministers requested the telecom majors like Airtel,Voda etc. to reduce charge of voice call. They did not do it voluntarily. Now they are forced to. Anyhow, Jio is bringing the digital india dream of our PM to reality.

Dr Rao_London Mar 15, 2017 08:20pm

@Saif Zulfiqar His father was Dhirubhai Ambani, who funded Mrs Indira Gandhi's return to power in 1980. Then, he founded Reliance Textiles and aftr his demise, the family moved in to other spheres like petrochemicals, phrmaceuticals, IT and medical care. All those businessmen who did well in the 80s are doing very well now. Nothing to do with Modi nor his RAJASTHANI family. He certainly not a Gujarathi. Being silly are we?

Somya Mar 15, 2017 08:43pm

Switching to 4G because... Jio 4G is cheaper than airtel 3G n you can make unlimited voice calls as well. Haven't got any call from airtel for any tariff plan change!

No, it is the survival of fittest

SID Mar 15, 2017 10:11pm

@Leo I have been using JIO for last 6 months. Average speed is 7 mbps to 12 mbps depending upon locality . This speed is sufficient to watch 1080p video on youtube without buffering. All you have to pay $5 per month & a 4G VoLTE phone. Plus life time voice call free .

AXH Mar 15, 2017 10:22pm

This is the positive side of free market and competition. @FRANKENSTEIN - TATA does not export cars made in India. TATA bought Jaguar and Range Rover. So, it did not have the capability to build quality cars and it simply acquire that by buying these companies.

It's all about "deep pockets of corruption" and how many Indian politicians are being bribed by Ambanis to pass legislation favoring their telecom companies. Modi and Ambanis are very close and now we know why.

secularist Mar 16, 2017 07:56am

@Alam Wrong. Dhirubhai Ambani was born in Chorvad in Gujarat and Mukesh Ambani was not born till 1957, ten years after partition, in Aden, Yemen.

Thanks to Reliance Jio, my internet connection is like a rocket strapped to a lightspeed afterburner. I love this man and I want to make him richer !! The multinational telecom companies were looting India with their high charges and restrictive bandwidth.

There's more to come, he's gonna launch jio fibre broadband network as well.

mangoman Mar 16, 2017 08:09am

@Saif Zulfiqar No, he isn't. I believe he was and still is closer to congress leadership.

Uday Kulkarni Mar 16, 2017 08:17am

@M.Saeed - If someone is rich that does not automatically make him or her an exploiter. I suggest you to watch the Bollywood film Guru starring Abhishekh Bachhan and Aishwarya Rai Bachhan; which is made on biography of Dhirubhai Ambani (father of Mukesh & Anil) which shows the story of rags to riches & the struggle of Dhirubhai when he started working in Aden in an oil company after travelling from Gujarat to seek a job. He returned to India in 1958 and started his business as a stock broker dealing in cotton and man made fibres in Mumbai. His companies have millions of Indian shareholders who have also made lots of money all along the years when the Reliance business grew . Story of Taxi driver in Bombay who made money to get his 3 daughters married just when he purchased the initial shares of Reliance for few thousand rupees is well documented. Every Indian who bought initial shares of reliance & who kept getting subsequent dividend shares are millionaires in India like Microsoft.

Uday Kulkarni Mar 16, 2017 08:28am

@Observer - So true, the Canadian telecom rates for consumers are the highest in the world, thanks to the cartel of two major telecom giants Bell and Rogers . All other companies like Telus; Fido are bought over by either of these two giants and the government is turning blind eye to this informal cartel formed by the two companies to an extent that US companies like Verizon and AT & T are allowed only limited access only to commercial markets in Canada. Reliance also tried to enter Canadian market but has a restricted entry.

INVINCIBLE Mar 16, 2017 08:32am

Many Indians don't know this fact about Ambani senior: while poor and jobless in Yemen, a Pakistan businessman gave him his first job. The rest is history!

star Mar 16, 2017 09:19am

if geo can fatch 100 million customer in 6 month, you can imagine size of market is INDIA,,,

DemocraTe1 Mar 16, 2017 09:41am

@Maxx sorry to say such rich people have least concerned play any uplift role for their poor people except to provide jobs that too very limited. Think our whole region is exploited by such richies.

Vish Mar 16, 2017 09:47am

@Saif Zulfiqar : he worked for Rs 1 as his early income do you know that ?

SID Mar 16, 2017 10:19am

@ENIGMA During Congress period there was 2G scam . Companies were given spectrum of first come fist serve basis at throw away price. Result was $ 26 billion loss to Govt exchequer ( as per CAG report) . After SC struck down the 2G spectrum allocation , 3G & 4G spectrum was allocated through online bidding . It was transparent & no one raised finger on the auction till now.

Mukesh Ambani father Dhiru Bhai Ambani started his business selling polyester yarn on a bicycle which is now billions of dollars empire. The Ambanis never forgot their roots continued to roll out poor friendly phone plans for the past several decades. Mukesh is a role model for thousands of Indian but his biggest asset his humility despite possessing billions.

@Random Indian RCOM was brainchild of Mukesh Ambani. After Reliance empire split, it went to Anil Ambani . His ambition was to make mobile call rates cheaper than postcard so that everyone in India can afford it. RCOM entry to mobile market brought down tariff this level . Ditto with JIO . It will bring down tariff of broadband service & data pack cost . After 45 days of lunching operation, it is the largest mobile company is the world in terms of data use ( 16 TB data everyday ) .

Free market in action. Western countries only like this when it goes to their advantage. When it does not then they elect populist leaders, close tborders, give judgements on hijab and pull out from international treates. A major Western publisher found it interesting that communist China is now the most pro free market economy on world stage.

His father Dhiru Bhai Ambani and he himself are visionaries. His father first started the first telecom boom in india with Reliance "Smart" when no one was willing to come in this market. They also started CDMA networks which is still much better than GSM but the idea didn't do well because not much users had the expensive CDMA enabled phones. His father started the telecom revolution with the slogan "Kar lo duniya mutthi main". His current company jio is offering free unlimited local, STD, roaming and 1 GB data free each day in 99rs after being free for 6 months. He very well believe in disrupting the market and at the end everybody get the benefit because everybody learns from jio and start doing better and this goes on and on.

As Ambani knows no growth and future in Oil industry. He wants to get into digital economy and whats its base smartphone, by which you can get all information what customer is doing 24*7. Once you have this information you can sell and use it to kill any competition.

I can confidently say his target is not the telecom this is just the medium once he has the information Reliance can become Amazon + Walmart + Bollywood + Facebook + Cable TV + Google + IPL + = 1 Trillion dollar + company, amazon trying to do it in india.

Reliance realized late however seems on right path.

D Patel Mar 16, 2017 06:45pm

For long time the telecom revolution in India have helped poor people come out of poverty and enter into middle class. It is common place knowledge that in India poorest of the poor can afford a cell phone. They save money by using "Missed Call" method of communication where the phone charges are billed to the initiator and not to both parties. Past rulers had wasted huge public money in award process of the WiFi spectrum and pocketed billions of dollars in corruption. Many beneficiary companies of this corrupt process do not want to bring innovation and efficiencies to stay in Indian competitive market are choosing to take money and run.

Dhirubhai Ambani the father of Mukesh and Anil had a vision and a business model that succeeded beyond anybody's dreams. But in India The Ambanis are not the only ones who have amassed an immense fortune in one generation. There is Mr.Murti a south Indian(Infosys), The Adanis another Gujarati family, Azim Premji a muslim (Wipro), Rasna (Parsis), Shah Rukh Khan, and many others all INDIANS. The business model in India has obviously succeeded. besides there are many old moneyed families like the Tatas and Godrejs, and the Palanjis (all Parsis), The Birlas, The Ruia's, Lakshami Mittal (all Marwaris) and on and on.

@M.Saeed how do you define exploitation? What he should do? Give freebie to people so that they can enjoy money earned by him and do nothing? World of capitalism aNd communism defines these concept. None of these concept work if you take it to exterems. Everything should be in moderation. India has moderation! We also had example of Vijay Malaya and Harsha Mehta who swindle money, they were caught and had to run away or jailed. Mukesh Ambani can not be called as exploiter but he is good enough person and manipulate system within the boundary defined by legal framework. He is not friend of Modi, his father was close to Indira Gandhi, who allowed him to set up Petrochemical company in India... businessmen have to use good relations with politician to get permits and licenses.

That is what Google is presently doing. It is what Face Book too is doing.

Pb Mar 17, 2017 01:20pm

Telecom was actually needed in India because mostly all telecom companies were increasing data price and looting customer anyway. for 1 GB 3G data they were taking around Rs. 300 + tax and validity was reduced from 30 days to 28 days so in a year users were paying for 13 months. and service was going very poor. Thanks to JIO, all telecom companies are now reducing price drastically and will have to provide proper service.

SID Mar 17, 2017 01:23pm

But, I am disappointed in terms of quality, over the hypes charges and poor Network. 3 months back, I stared JIO as it was free to use and I got without paying. You will never make money and you will fail. You must start with a purpose and be the best in the world.’ Money is a by-product. All of us eat the same dal-roti. Always chase your purpose. Always have a purpose. Be passionate about things you do. Dreams are something that you don’t have when you sleep. Dreams should be what keeps you awake. All this money, when you take it seriously, will disappear otherwise’.
