SHEIKHUPURA, July 24: A youth was killed while three others sustained critical injuries when two rival groups exchanged fire near the railway crossing on Gujranwala Road here on Thursday evening.

The B-Division police identified the youth as Ulfat (22) and the injured as Akhtar, Qamar and Abbas.

Meanwhile, in Mandi Faizabad, a shopkeeper sustained bullet injuries when he tried to resist five armed dacoits early on Thursday morning.

Afzal was asleep at his house when the dacoits barged in. He was taken to the Mayo Hospital in Lahore in critical condition.

The Faizabad police are investigating the case.

In a similar incident in Rasool Town, a labourer, Ashraf, sustained bullet injuries. He had been intercepted by two armed dacoits, and was also deprived of Rs4,000 in cash.

POs HELD: Sadder Circle police claimed to have arrested 87 proclaimed offenders and 46 court absconders in a grand operation launched against the anti-social elements.

ASP Waqar Ahmad Khan told newsmen here on Wednesday that police had also recovered huge quantity of sophisticated weapons from the custody of arrested outlaws.

He said the police conducted raids on various hideouts of criminals at Khanqah Dogran, Safdrabad and rural areas of Farooqabad. He said most of the arrested outlaws were involved in cases of murder, dacoity, robbery and gang-rape.

15 injured: Fifteen passengers sustained injuries, five of them serious, on Wednesday in a headon collision between a coaster and a jeep near Herder on Gujranwala Road, some 18 kilometres from here.
