ISLAMABAD: A man allegedly set his wife on fire over a demotic issue in G-8/1 on Wednesday, police said.

The police said the woman suffered over 50pc burns and was shifted to a hospital.

In statement to the police, the woman said her husband was a drunkard. Her insistence to quit the habit would lead to harsh arguments and scuffle with him, police said while quoting her.

Last night they again engaged in the argument over the issue which resulted into a physical fight, the police stated, adding that later he brought petrol and sprinkled on her and set her on fire.

She started screaming which caught the attention of her parents, siblings and neighbours who rushed to her rescue, they stated, adding that the fire was extinguished and she was taken to the hospital.

Karachi Company police have registered a case on charges of attempted murder.
