ISLAMABAD, Dec 23: Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali has reiterated his government’s commitment to continue efforts for the stability and continuity of the democratic system in the country.

He was speaking at a meeting with party heads of the allies of the Pakistan Muslim League at the Prime Minister’ House here on Tuesday.

The prime minister took the allies into confidence with regard to the understanding reached with the MMA leadership recently on the issue of constitutional amendments.

He said an amicable settlement between the government and the opposition augured well for the future of democracy in the country.

He hoped that the political atmosphere would undergo a pleasant change as a result of the treasury- opposition understanding, and the parliament would be able to concentrate on its job of legislation.

PML President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, who also attended the meeting, said all political parties had a joint responsibility to work for strengthening and consolidating the democratic system.

He briefed the party heads on the proposed package of constitutional amendments, and hoped that the year-long climate of uncertainty and political polarization would end with the government-opposition understanding, and that things would move forward.

Leaders of PML and its allies praised the “statesmanship” and “wisdom” of Prime Minister Jamali and PML president Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain.—APP
