Opposition leaders in the National Assembly on Thursday moved a privilege motion against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif over alleged "contempt of the House".
The motion was moved under Rule 95 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the NA, 2007 by the leader of opposition and others.
It stated that "the plea taken by the premier's lawyer in the apex court on Jan 16, to do away with the PM's speech in the assembly" explaining a money trail of the first family is an admission that "the prime minister did not tell the truth to the assembly."
The document went on to read that details of the family's money trail declared before the House by the premier himself and those shared by his lawyer in the Supreme Court contradict each other and the fact "illustrates that the prime minister willfully deceived the House on the issue."
The privilege motion, submitted in the presence of Leader of Opposition in National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah, also stated that a debate should be held on the topic in the House regarding the subject.
"This is blatant breach of the privilege of the whole House. The matter should immediately be taken up for discussion and action," it read.
Shah questioned why the premier was seeking immunity if he had earlier stated in his speech that he possesses all relevant evidence regarding his stance on the Panama Papers.
BBC Urdu reported that it is expected the privilege motion would be submitted in the next session of the National Assembly.
The National Assembly is set to resume its session on Jan 26.
Earlier this week during the hearing of the case in the Supreme Court of Pakistan, PM's counsel said that they would also be talking about the PM's speeches, Maryam Nawaz's status as a dependent and the matter of her alleged ownership of the family's London properties.
Makhdoom Ali Khan, the PM's counsel, argued that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's speech delivered in the National Assembly last year following the Panama leaks has no discrepancies or misstatements and that even if it had, the country's premier has immunity from prosecution.

I'm not PML-N supporter but if this is the reason privilege motion is moved against PM. Then, the same act should had been taken against Ch. Nisar and Eatizaz Ahsan who claimed on the same floor that they both have proofs of corruption against each other. Later on, they just let it go to strengthen the democracy. What a joke !

These daily antics and tricks are becoming sickening while nothing worth cheering about is becoming the norm. No where else do you this politcal drama carry on for such a long time.
Look around you. You will find plenty of examples where the sitting PM/President gracefully bowed out after allegations of impropriety came out. Or the parliament revolted to disqualify the leaders to force their resignation. Iceland, Brazil, South Africa and now South Korea come to mind. Why should Pakistani continue to tolerate this nonsense? Get rid of these people for once, clean the house and set an example of quite revolution for the world to follow.

I don't know the details of the parliamentary setup but I do know that in the parliamentary form of the government (which Pakistan has) , there is a question-answer session on the regular basis. Why is Nawaz Sharif deliberately avoiding it ?

@salar : It may seem like PPP is abandoning burning ship but in my personal opinion part of their strategy. This is same strategy that PML-N followed during PPP regime. Support ruling party and then oppose before elections. This is how friendly opposition worked before and is working now.

There is clear bias here. If Nawaz Sharif lied once, he is a criminal. But if Imran Khan lies everyday on media, kept mum about his own offshore companies to evade taxes, and keeps attacking individuals on personal level without any evidence like the 35 puncture story he is allowed to go free. Apparently, he is also the kind of politician who breaks the walls of the parliament one day and walks inside building the next day like nothing happened.

The motion is a tactical move by the PPP which is more likely to gain most out of it , especially in Punjab . It's being presented at a time when young Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has become active in that province , and also the fact that the Panama Papers have severely damaged the popularity of PML-N . The motion is not meant to dislodge the prime minister . It's an attempt to enhance the image of the PPP . It knows the outcome of this motion .
