HYDERABAD, Dec 23: The leader of the opposition in the Sindh Assembly, Nisar Ahmad Khuhro, has said the Constitution is being defaced by the rulers to establish the presidential form of government and added that judges are being given extension so that they support them.

He was speaking at a condolence meeting held to pay tribute to Maulana Shah Ahmad Noorani in Phuleli on Monday night.

Mr Khuhro said the Constitution had no provision allowing a uniformed president and added that the people should resist such attempts.

He observed that by amending 29 articles of the Constitution, its face would be changed altogether. He said the country had already undergone such experiences.

He said only those could save the Constitution who had created it.

The Sindh People’s Party Parliamentarians president lauded the services of the late Noorani in the cause of democracy and for the rights of the people. He said he had always talked of the people’s power.

He said the masses were being told by the rulers that they were incompetent to run the affairs of the country. The people’s right to rule over the country had been snatched, he maintained.

Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal MNA Sahibzada Abul Khair Mohammad Zubair hailed Maulana Noorani for uniting the people belonging to different schools of thought on one platform.

He said the MMA had made it clear to President Gen Pervez Musharraf that no more concession would be offered to him on the Legal Framework Order.

He said the MMA resorted to the protest to uphold the supremacy of parliament.

Mr Zubair made it clear that MMA legislators would not side with the government and would sit on opposition benches even after the LFO issue was resolved.

The MMA parliamentary leader in the Sindh Assembly, Umer Sadiq, and MPAs Nasrullah Shajee, Abdul Rehman Rajput, Hameedullah Khan, Yunus Barai and others also paid tribute to Maulana Noorani.

They said it was up to MMA leaders and activists to complete his mission.
