KARACHI, Dec 20: The Chairman of the Alliance for the Restoration of Democracy, Makhdoom Amin Fahim, has urged the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal not to enter into any deal with the government on the Legal Framework Order, and declared that the ARD would continue its struggle even if a govt-MMA agreement was signed.
He was talking to newsmen during the ARD meeting here on Saturday which reviewed the prevailing political situation in the country.
He declared that the ARD was the real opposition because after negotiating a deal on LFO with the government, the MMA had lost its claim to be an opposition party.
“When the Constitution does not permit even the Supreme Court to amend the Constitution, how can we allow one individual that authority to do whatever he wants to satisfy his ego at the cost of collective national interest,” said Makhdoom Fahim.
He accused the regime for creating constitutional crisis in the country. Asked about the possible meeting between MMA’s acting chief Qazi Hussain Ahmad a nd Benazir Bhutto, chairperson of the PPP in Dubai, the ARD chief said he was not aware of any such proposal.
He declared that ARD’s struggle for the supremacy of Constitution and rights of the people would continue and Sunday’s public meeting at Kakri ground in Karachi would be part of it.
He further said that next meeting would be held in Dera Ismail Khan on Jan 11. Meanwhile, the Sindh chapter of the Alliance has complained that local administration and the provincial government were creating obstacles and not letting its workers to mobilise the people.
Makhdoom Fahim left the meeting half way after advocate Nafees Siddiqui whispered something in his ears. It was not known what information Mr Siddiqui passed on to him. But he immediately left after briefly talking to newsmen.
TAHMINA: Later briefing reporters, Tahmina Daultana of PML-N said the meeting expressed concern over Gen Pervez Musharraf’s statement on Kashmir and Indian fencing along the LoC, and vowed not to accept the amendments, even if the regime was able to get two-thirds majority, with MMA’s help, for the passage of LFO.
She said the ARD believed that MMA’s deal with the government would strengthen dictators and emphasised that for the supremacy of democratic dispensation it was necessary to sacrifice self-interest over collective national interest.
Ms Daultana said the ARD was concerned over Gen Musharraf’s statement in which he had declared his readiness to “set aside” the “stated position” on Kashmir issue.
