KARACHI, Dec 20: An alleged religious extremist was arrested on Saturday for possessing dynamite sticks in Preedy police limits.

The police said that they intercepted Aftab Nazeer on Preedy Street on suspicion. During his search, 30 dynamite sticks, without detonators, were recovered from the handbag he was carrying. He was taken into custody and an FIR (262/03) under section, 4/5 (Explosive Act), was registered against him.

Preedy police claimed that during grilling, Aftab disclosed that he belonged to a group, Harkat Mujahid-al-Islami, and intended to explode the dynamites at a crowded place in the city.

However, a police official said: “Aftab cannot be declared a religious extremist just because he wears a beard. We are interrogating him and during initial interrogations, he did not disclose anything substantial.”

WOUNDED: A man was shot at and wounded near KDA Scheme-1 in Tipu Sultan police limits.

Ferozabad police said that some unknown men intercepted Atif alias Gola, 25, near Tipu Sultan roundabout, and fired three bullets at him and fled. He was taken to a hospital, where his condition was stated to be serious.

ACCIDENT: A middle-aged man died after he was hit by an unknown vehicle near Mazar-i-Quaid on Saturday morning.

Police said that Hafiz Deen Mohammad, 50, was hit by a vehicle and got injured seriously. He was taken to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
