President appoints new MI chief

ISLAMABAD, Dec 18: President Gen Pervez Musharraf on Thursday made changes in the Pakistan Army, appointing military secretary as new chief of Military Intelligence, and appointed new corps commander of Lahore, and new chief of general staff.

According to Inter Service Public Relations, Lt-Gen Shahid Aziz has been appointed new corps commander of Lahore in place of Lt-Gen Zarrar Azim.

The outgoing Corps Commander Lahore Lt-Gen Zarrar Azim has been appointed inspector-general training and evaluation at the General Headquarters.

Maj-Gen Tariq Majid has been promoted to the rank of lieutenant-general and appointed chief of general staff at the General Headquarters.

President’s Military Secretary Maj-Gen Nadeem Taj has been appointed director-general Military Intelligence. He has replaced Maj-Gen Tariq Majid who has been elevated to the rank lieutenant general and appointed chief of general staff.

General Officer Commanding (GOC) Maj-Gen Shafat Shah has been posted as military secretary to the president.

Director-General MT, at GHQ, Maj-Gen Muhammad Javed has been transferred and posted as chairman Pakistan Ordnance Factories (POF) Wah while chairman POF Lt-Gen Abdul Qayyum will retire on Jan 5.

Meanwhile, Maj-Gen Tariq Majid would wear his rank of lieutenant-general on Dec 31.

Maj-Gen Tariq Majid was commissioned in Baluch Regiment in 1971, besides graduating from Command and Staff College and National Defence College. He has attended various military courses abroad.

The general officer has a vast experience of command, staff and instructional appointments. During his military career, he has commanded infantry brigade and an infantry division.

Presently, he is serving as director-general Military Intelligence at the General Headquarters Rawalpindi.
