‘Amnesty scheme’

Published December 4, 2016

THIS refers to your editorial ‘Amnesty scheme’ (Nov 24). Giving in to the demand of amnesty for the real estate sector by just paying 3pc tax is a big joke.

I am surprised that the committee has agreed to this proposal. People involved in this business belong to the moneyed class. They have accumulated wealth through dubious means without ever paying income tax in their lives.

They should justify their source of income each year and pay cumulative taxes applicable. If the government really wants to give tax amnesty, then, once-off the tax rate should be 30pc and not 3pc. Please look what the Modi government has been doing in India to eliminate black money.
