KHAIRPUR, Dec 16: District Nazim Nafisa Shah has accused feudal lords of backing the custom of Karo-kari.

She was speaking as chief guest at a seminar on Karo-kari, organized by the Citizens’ Action Committee for Women Rights here on Monday.

She said the Jirga system strengthened when law failed, adding that the same was the case in Sindh.

She said law experts and police officials did not attend the seminar which, she observed, proved that they supported the Jirga system. It was due to this reason that the Jirga system was more powerful in Khairpur than anywhere else, she added.

She regretted that women were killed after being labelled Kari and Jirga verdicts in such cases were always unfair.

She opposed the payment of compensation to heirs of the deceased in Karo-kari cases.
