PESHAWAR, Dec 12: The Joint Action Committee (JAC), a conglomerate of non-governmental organizations working for the betterment the womenfolk, held a demonstration against the Hudood Ordinance outside the NWFP Assembly here on Friday.
The protest demonstration was jointly organized by the Aurat Foundation, Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, Human Resource Management and Development Centre, Strengthening Participatory Organization, Blue Veins and Shirkatgah to denounce what they called the anti-women and gender-based discriminatory laws.
Rakhshanda Naz, Bushra Gohar, Yasmin, Arshad Khan and others led the protest and distributed pamphlets amongst the people demanding the repeal of Hudood Ordinance.
The protesters criticized the resolution on the enforcement of Hudood Ordinance by the NWFP Assembly members and demanded of the government to implement the recommendations of the National Commission on the Status of Women.
Later, MMA MPAs, Sabira Shakir, Zubaida Khatoon, Nargas Zain, Aftab Shabir, Fauzia Farrukh and Shagufta Naz — all belonging to the Jamaat-i-Islami — condemned the JAC protest against the Hudood laws.
They said the NWFP Assembly had adopted Shariat Bill and a resolution for the implementations of the Hudood laws without any amendment into it.
SURPRISE VISIT: NWFP Governor Syed Iftikhar Hussain Shah has expressed dismay at the performance of the immigration and passport office and hinted at taking disciplinary action against the officials concerned.
During a surprise visit to the immigration and passport office on Charsadda Road here on Friday, the governor inquired from the people present there about the performance and attitude of the officials towards their (people’s) problems.
The governor also took an strong exception to the lack of facilities particularly with regard to the waiting room, drinking water and other requirements. The officials could not satisfy the governor in this regard.
He also met people individually in the office and heard their complaints viz a viz the passport office’s working. He expressed concern that despite clear instructions from the federal government and the PM for the provision of facilities to the people, the Peshawar office seemed to have failed to comply with the directives.
