KARACHI: A young soldier of the Pakistan Rangers Sindh was shot dead allegedly by a colleague of his in the paramilitary force’s bachelors hostel in the limits of the Sharea Faisal police station in the early hours of Sunday morning, officials said.

The suspect was arrested with the official rifle and handed over to police for investigation.

Gulshan SP Dr Fahad Ahmed told Dawn that at around 3am, the suspect, Rangers’ sepoy Syed Ali Murtaza, fired upon his colleague sepoy Mashooq Ali, 35, with his official G-3 rifle, killing him on the spot.

The incident occurred in the bachelor quarters of 63 Wing Bhittai Rangers (Bravo Company Platoon No 1) near the KDA (Karachi Development Authority) Rest House.

The senior police officer said the suspect fired six bullets of which three hit the victim.

The suspect was arrested, and the weapon and spent bullet casings were recovered by the Rangers.

Sources said that initially, the body of the Rangers personnel was taken to the Civil Hospital Karachi for a post-mortem examination, but the doctors there did not entertain the case for some unknown reasons. Later on, the body was transported to PNS Shifa and subsequently to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for fulfilling legal formalities.

After the post-mortem examination, the body was handed over to the Rangers.

A Sharea Faisal police official said the FIR (511/2016) had been registered against the detained Rangers personnel under Section 302 (murder) of the Pakistan Penal Code.
