COLOMBO: A district court on Saturday lifted a temporary injunction against a controversial “docufilm” based on an alleged sexual misconduct of a former district judge in Sri Lanka.

The film, Usaviya Nihandai (Silence in the Courts) by veteran Lankan filmmaker Prasanna Vithanage, was released at major theatres in Colombo and elsewhere on Saturday.

Film Director Vithanage based the storyline on investigative articles by Lankan journalist Victor Ivan and is fighting the case as they feel that corrupt and immoral judges must be exposed.

Those lobbying for social justice had expressed concern over the injunction against the film.

Earlier the film had been passed by the Public Performance Board and it had been screened in several festivals abroad. Vithanage said the court injunction was issued just before it was to be released in theatres on Oct 6.

Former district judge Lenin Ratnayake had filed a case against the film being screened and the case will be heard again on Jan 19.
