HYDERABAD, Dec 11: Sindh inspector general of prisons, Brig Nisar Mahar, has appealed to the district Nazim, Dr Makhdoom Rafik Zaman, to make efforts for securing a separate ward for the inmates of Central and Nara prisons in the Civil Hospital Hyderabad.

Mr Mahar made the request to the district Nazim after the inaugural ceremony of a special prison for women at the Central Jail on Wednesday and said that the ward would be constructed by the prison department but the hospital would have to provide the space.

Mr Zaman informed the IG that being a teaching hospital, it did not fall under the district government, therefore, it would be difficult to obtain the space and added that though space could be obtained in the Qasimabad Hospital but it lacked equipment.

He said that he would request the Sindh health secretary to allocate some space for the prisoners’ ward.

The IG said that he would also talk to the Sindh chief minister as it was very difficult to move prisoners to and from the Civil Hospital keeping in mind the shortage of police vans and escort vehicles.

The chairperson, District Public Safety Commission, however, said that such a space could be provided in the Red Crescent Hospital, Latifabad.

It may be noted that jail authorities have been making requests for establishment of a separate prisoners’ ward in the Civil Hospital but in vain.

ACCIDENTS: Abdul Samad was killed while Irshad and Zulfikar were injured in a collision between a car and a bus near Hatri on Thursday.
