Aqeel, Abid enter semis

ISLAMABAD: Top-ran­ked Aqeel Khan, second seed Mohammad Abid, fourth-seeded Heera Ashiq and eighth seed Muzammil Murtaza eased past their opponents to reach the semi-finals of the First Chairman POF Board National Ranking Tennis Championships on Thursday.

Aqeel outplayed sixth seed Ahmed Chaudhry 6-1, 6-2 in their last-eight clash at the Ordinance Club Wah Cantt to set up a semi-final against Heera who outclassed Barkatullah 6-1, 6-2.

The biggest upset of the day came when Muzammil ousted third seed Shahzad Khan 3-6, 6-3, 6-0 in an exciting contest. In the last-four, Muzammil will face Abid, a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Aman Atiq.

Men’s singles (quarter-finals): Aqeel Khan bt Ahmed Chaudhry 6-1, 6-2; Heera Ashiq bt Barkat ullah 6-1, 6-2; Muzammil Murtaza bt Shahzad Khan 3-6, 6-3, 6-0; Mohammad Abid bt Aman Atiq 6-2, 6-0.

Men’s doubles (quarter-finals): Aqeel Khan/Shahzad Khan bt Farhan Shah/Dr. Usman 6-2, 6-2; Muzammil Murtaza/Mudassir Murtaza bt Abdal Haider/Arham Atiq 4-6, 7-5, 10-5; Mohammad Abid/Usman Rafiq bt Malik Abdul Rehman/Ahmed Babar 6-2, 7-5; Heera Ashiq/ Ahmed Chaudhry bt Umair Salim/Syed Shams 6-2, 6-0.

Boys’ under-18 singles (quarter-finals): Muzammil Murtaza bt Saqib Umer 6-0, 6-3; Aman Atiq bt Asadullah 6-0, 6-0; Yousaf Khan bt Barkatullah 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, 6-2; Haris Irfan-ul-Haq bt Mohammad Shoaib 6-2, 6-3.

Boys’ under-14 singles (quarter-finals): Mohammad Shoaib bt Mohammad Abdullah 4-2, 4-0; Nalain Abbas bt Hamza Roman 4-1, 5-3; Sami Zaib bt Hamid Israr 4-0, 4-0; Hamza Bin Rehan bt Samad Areejo 4-0, 5-4 (4-2).

Boys’ under-10 singles (quarter-finals): Hamid Israr bt M. Talha Khan 4-1, 4-0; Bilal Asim bt Ahmed Nael Qureshi 4-1, 4-1; Mohammad Huzaifa Khan bt Mohammad 4-0, 4-0; Hamza Roman bt Yahya Musa Luni 4-1, 4-1.
