ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Army on Tuesday said joint military exercise with Russia was progressing well.
“The exercise brings value to both sides,” Military Spokesman Lt Gen Asim Bajwa said in a Twitter update about the drills that began on Saturday.
The update came as the special operations drills codenamed ‘Druzhbha-2016’ — a Russian word meaning “friendship” — got into full swing.
Commander of Peshawar Corps Lt Gen Hidayat-ur-Rehman visited the troops taking part in the exercise in Cherat and interacted with them. Initial couple of days were spent on acclimatisation, familiarisation and other procedures, a military official said.
The exercise will continue till Oct 10. Army Chief Gen Raheel Sharif is expected to attend the concluding ceremony. A contingent of Russian troops is in Pakistan for the first joint military exercise here, which was described as a reflection of the growing relations between the two militaries.
The two countries have a defence cooperation agreement which they signed in Nov 2014. It provides for cooperation for promoting international security; intensification of counterterrorism efforts and arms control activities; strengthening collaboration in various military fields and sharing experiences.
The exercise came as a surprise to Indians, who expected Moscow to pay heed to their advice against participating in it.

At the height of a stand-off with India, Russia disregarded Indian pressure and came to Pakistan for this exercise.

Here these both(india & pakisthan) countries people are in poverty not even eating one normal meal a day and also no medicines hospital fecilities to cure their illness as well ? ? ? ?

for your information dawn. India is also holding an exercise with Russia at voldsvok in far west Russia. and it is not a smaller one. Tanks rockets and drones are also being used

@Aslam shaikh Military excerise between the two nations is the biggest diplomatic victory, specially when there has never been one in past and with the historical baggage they both carry. Not sure which world you are living in.

they are doing exercise with Pakistan but are going to lease 2nd nuclear submarine to india plus they have also exported an aircraft carrier to India and are also helping Indians with aircraft arresting tech for the aircraft India is constructing at cochi.

An excellent first start; let us hope this spirit of cooperation and building of mutual ties continues. Pakistan should never have ignored such an important and influential country as Russia, specially when it is its immediate neighbor. But ties can be mended and must be mended. The need for local alliances and cooperation is a must. More importantly, it is the right and principled thing to do. We must focus on our immediate neighborhood, and build friendly ties with all those who do not harbor us ill will.
We also need to get out of this mindset of building ties with one party at the expense of other. And should it come to that, building ties with neighbors should always take priority.

And what do you call a diplomatic victory-nothing when that nothing happens in a vacuum of nothingness. Joint military exercises happen jointly only when there is diplomatic good will between countries. And it is diplomatic defeat when one country shuns away the other country for what it regards as unacceptable such as when Russia rejected India's request to not hold this military exercise with Pakistan.
