SIALKOT, Dec 5: Punjab Revenue Minister Gul Hameed Rokhari has said patwaris would soon be given the status of revenue officers.

He was speaking after administering oath to newly elected office-bearers of the Anjuman Patwarian here on Friday.

He said the Punjab government has started revamping the revenue department. Patwaris would be given residences and office in their patwar circles, he added.

The step has been taken to redress public grievances. Patwaris and gardawars were public servants and they should serve the people diligently, he said.

He assured patwaris that their problems would be solved on priority basis.

Mr Rokhari said the Punjab government was also considering a proposal to enhance the salaries of patwaris and gardawars.

Sialkot district Nazim Mian Naeem Javaid said revenue record would be computerized. The district government has arranged computer training of 250 patwaris.

SPECIAL CHILDREN: Punjab Special Education Minister Qudsia Lodhi said the NGOs providing moral, social and financial support to the special children would be encouraged and patronized.

She said at the inaugural ceremony of a school for special children here that the government was making efforts for the welfare of special children and upholding the prestige of their teachers in society.

She said the Punjab government had allocated Rs20 million for the purpose. She urged NGOs, businessmen and philanthropists to come forward and help the government.

Ms Lodhi announced that training workshops for the teachers would be held in January 2004.
