HYDERABAD, Dec 31: The taluka council, Hyderabad City, disposed of a 12-point agenda in a meeting on Monday.

The convener of the council, Abdul Qadeer Naghar (advocate), presided over the meeting.

The meeting adopted four resolutions pertaining to the transfer of Pathan Colony bus stand to the bus terminal near the Central Jail Hyderabad and distribution of Zakat among the deserving people under the supervision of the elected representatives of the people.

The council opposed the transfer and merger of schools and colleges.

The meeting deferred the decision about the conversion of Al-Mustafa ground into a park and invited tenders about the bus terminal for which a separate committee of council members would be constituted.

MUET: The vice chancellor, Mehran University of Engineer and Technology Jamshoro, Dr. Abdur Rehman Memon said that the Mehran University was the pioneer in introducing admissions test with a view to getting ISO-9000 certification.

He said this while addressing fresh students of 02-batch on the orientation day at the university campus on Monday.

He said that orientation day was being introduced as a mega event in the university.

He said that it was important for students to know about the university and their classes on the very first day so that they felt relaxed, and added that the orientation was aimed at briefing the newcomers about their four-year stay at the campus.

He expressed hope that the new entrants would follow the rules and regulations strictly because they had been granted admission on the basis of pure merit.

The vice chancellor elucidated that there was a vast difference between college and university life as the life in a professional institution was more demanding academically.

He cautioned them that 75 per cent attendance in classes was a mandatory provision of rules as was the term-back policy.

He said it was in the interest of the newcomers not to fall prey to the troublemakers who had their own vested interests.

He said he had already given instructions to responsible officers and professors to brief the newcomers in detail about the academic schedule and the do’s and dont’s of the university.

The vice chancellor said the new entrants should remember that their only purpose was to seek knowledge and refrain from indulging in non-academic and unlawful activities.

He urged students including those from foreign countries to follow the hostel rules in letter and spirit and derive maximum benefit from library and Internet service which will be made available to them at nominal rates.

He said the students must never hesitate to meet their teachers and feel free to approach them in case of any difficulty.

Earlier, Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan Rajput, dean, faculty of Engineering, Dr. Dost Ali Khwaja, dean, faculty of Architecture, Engineer Abdul Aleem Rajput, the controller of examinations, the hostel provost, the chairman discipline committee, librarian, students welfare officer and others also addressed the newcomers.
