Fare hike leads to quarrels

SWABI, Dec 4: Quarrels between commuters and transporters were witnessed at various places in the city after the latter unilaterally increased fares on Wednesday.

According to commuters, the transporters raised fares without the approval of the provincial authorities.

Local transporters at the main bus stand warned the commuters that only those passengers should enter their vehicles who were ready to pay the increased fare.

They said that consecutive increase in petroleum prices had forced them to raise the fares. However, the transporters failed to display the fare list as a result of which arguments and even scuffles took place.

On the Swabi-Topi Road, transporters refused to take the passengers to their destinations and told them to leave their vehicles after they refused to pay the increased fare.

When approached, an official told this correspondent that the new fare list would be issued to the transporters in a few days.

KILLED: A proclaimed offender was killed in a “police encounter” late Wednesday, police said.

Abdur Rahim, a resident of Panjpir, had allegedly killed his brother in April over some domestic issue.

On a tip-off, the police raided the Panjpir village. When Rahim saw the police party, he opened fire at them, they said. The fire was returned and Rahim was wounded.

He was taken to the DHQ hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.
