Qazi asks govt to fulfil commitments

Published December 4, 2003

ABBOTTABAD, Dec 3: Jamaat-i-Islami chief Qazi Hussain Ahmed on Tuesday warned that a campaign against President Pervez Musharraf would be launched if the government failed to fulfil its commitments with the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal before Dec 17.

Speaking as the chief guest at an Eid milan party organized by the Jamaat-i-Islami at the Bar Club, he asked Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali and Pakistan Muslim League President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain to play their role for the revival of democracy in the country.

He asked the PML leaders to join hands with the MMA for the strengthening of democratic institutions.

He said the ball was in the court of Gen Musharraf to put the country on the democratic route as the adoption by him of a democratic way to the presidency was the only solution to the country’s crisis.

He said the MMA was against the supremacy an individual as the running of the affairs of the country was the responsibility of the elected representatives.

He said the MMA was committed to honouring the deal reached with the government but it would play its role as the opposition.

He criticized President Musharraf for his support to the United States. NWFP ministers Sirajul Haq and Hussain Ahmed Kanju also spoke.
