International Day for Disabled today

Published December 3, 2003

KARACHI, Dec 2: The International Day for the Disabled is being observed in the city, like everywhere else around the globe, on Wednesday.

Special programmes are being broadcast by the electronic media to mark the day. In this regard, a function is being organized by social worker Jimmy Engineer for the handicapped children at Hotel Mehran at 11 am on Wednesday.

To mark the day, the Pakistan Post Office will be issuing a commemorative postage stamp. The design of the Rs2 postage stamp, being issued by the Pakistan Post Office, has been given by the federal ministry of women development, social welfare and special education. The picture on the stamp shows happy and smiling children with different handicaps. The PPO will also issue covers and leaflets, priced at Rs3 and Rs5 respectively, on the First Day of Issue.

International movements for empowerment of special persons have emerged rapidly through international conventions, which have made government a partner in global movement to work for this segment of the society.
