PESHAWAR: Former MPA Haji Shoaib Khan of Awami National Party (ANP) was shot dead on Sunday by unknown attackers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's town of Yar Hussain in Swabi district.

District Police Office (DPO) Javed Iqbal told Dawn that some gunmen entered Khan's political office and opened fire at the former MPA.

Khan, who sustained multiple wounds, was rushed to Peshawar's Lady Reading Hospital in critical condition where he succumbed to his wounds.

"Apparently it was a target killing," DPO Iqbal said, adding, "We have registered a First Information Report and launched raids to nab the attackers."

On Monday, Khan was laid to rest at his ancestral graveyard in Yar Hussain.

In April this year, ANP workers held a demonstration in Peshawar to protest the killing of their local leader in Swat Syed Jamshed Ali Khan and other colleagues.

The protesters threatened to stage sit-ins outside the KP chief minister's house and Governor House if targeted killings of ANP workers continued.
