Foreign raiders chase Japan Cup bonus

TOKYO, Nov 28: The Japan Cup boasts a 250-million yen ($2.3 million) winning purse, but the stakes are even higher on Sunday if foreign raiders Johar or Fields of Omagh capture the penultimate leg of the World Series Racing Championship.

Johar, who dead-heated for the Breeders’ Cup Turf in Santa Anita, and Cox Plate winner Fields of Omagh could earn around $1 million in bonuses for success in the 2.4-km test.

The Japan Racing Association has added incentives this year for winners of earlier global races to try their luck in Tokyo.

Alex Solis will ride the U.S. colt Johar, while Steven King will be aboard Australian gelding Fields of Omagh.

English raider Islington, partnered by Kieren Fallon, and Japanese colt Symboli Kris S, ridden by French ace Olivier Peslier, are among other notable runners.

Fallon rode Islington to a thrilling victory in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf in October. Symboli Kris S was third in last year’s Japan Cup won by Falbrav.

Other overseas challengers include the French duo of Ange Gabriel and Ana Marie.

The 23rd running of the Japan Cup has a total purse of 476 million yen ($4.36 million).

Latest London betting: 7-2 Islington, 9-2 Johar, 5-1 Symboli Kris S, 11-2 Ange Gabriel, 10-1 Tsurumaru Boy, 12-1 That’s The Plenty, 14-1 Tap Dance City, Sarafan, Neo Universe, 16-1 Fields of Omagh, Demon, 25-1 Tigertail, Sunrise Pegasus, Ana Marie, 28-1 Slew Valley, 33-1 Sakura President, 40-1 Active Bio, 66-1 Derby Regno.—Reuters
