Sohail and Waseem in FIH awards race

LONDON, Nov 28: Pakistan’s penalty corner specialist Sohail Abbas and his colleague Waseem Ahmad have been nominated for International Hockey Federation’s FIH “Senior player of the year” prestigious award for their consistent performance throughout the year.

Indian short corner expert Jugraj Singh, recuperating after a road accident, has been nominated for FIH “Young player of the year” award for his performance during the year. Besides him, nine others, including two more Indians - forwards Gagan Ajit Singh and Prabhjot Singh - have been short-listed for the award.

In “senior player of the year” category, Dilip Tirkey, who led India to Afro-Asian Games title, was short-listed for the award alongwith goalkeeper Devesh Chauhan for his exploits under the bar in Amstelveen Champion’s Trophy as well as the AAG.

According to a press release by FIH President Els van Breda Vriesman, the women’s nominations will be announced on Dec 4 in order to take into consideration performances during Champions Trophy starting Saturday in Sydney.

The winners will be determined by a secret ballot among panel members. Both the men’s and women’s winners will be announced on Dec 5 at Sydney.
