KARACHI: A Jamiat-i-Ulema-i-Islam Fazl (JUI-F) senator reportedly used abusive language against female analyst and rights activist Marvi Sirmed during a television show on Friday, triggering a social media uproar.
The show aired on private television channel NewsOne was debating recent honour killings in Pakistan when JUI-F Senator Hafiz Hamdullah got angry over Ms Sirmed for what he believed was her support for the comments of Barrister Masroor, a panelist in the programme, over a lack of reaction from the Council Of Islamic Ideology on these killings.
Hamdullah was of the view that Barrister Masroor should not have used the words 'pee k soey hue hain' (sleeping after getting intoxicated) for the CII chairman and his fellow JUI-F member Maulana Sherani.
"I won't allow you to speak if you are supporting his words," Hamdullah said to Sirmed.
The argument between Hamdullah and Sirmed resulted in an exchange of hot words between the rights activist and the lawmaker.
As seen in the video, Hamdullah continued that he would not allow Sirmed to speak.
The questionable language was omitted from the transmission. However, Sirmed in her Facebook post claimed that Hamdullah began verbally abusing her with the worst possible expletives and tried to physically attack her as well.
Talking to DawnNews, Sirmed said Hamdullah also tried to physically attack her, forcing panelist Fayaz ul Hassan Chauhan to get in the way to stop him and have the channel's management call its security staff.
She further claimed that the whole episode is recorded in the channel's cameras.
PTI's Fayaz ul Hassan Chauhan and Barrister Masroor supported Sirmed's claim on social media.
On Twitter, politicians, lawmakers and media representatives condemned the attack on Sirmed, some also calling for revoking Maulana Hamdullah's Senate membership.
The JUI-F senator has in the past used abusive language against a female anchor during a television talk show.
He verbally abused the show host for what he called her misrepresentation of clergy's views on violence against women.

I'm not a fan of JUI F but he tried to talk patiently till the end. She wouldn't let him talk at all. She would ask him a question, when he would try to give an answer, she would condescendingly interrupt as if she only wanted to hear a particular example to keep a provocative discussion going. He should've remained patient till the end though (shouldn't have said what he did). We as viewers would've judged it in his favor then.

It is unbelievable. These folks are so grown up and yet are incapable of controlling themselves. Yes Hafiz sahab was wrong as he should have let her speak. But then Marvi Sirmed too did not stop. I think both of them were wrong in this case. Hafiz sahab for not completely listening to her and disgracing her, and Marvi for giving more fuel to the fire by repeating reversing his words and using phrases like "tangain tor du gee" and "challbay."
I mean its weird that the support is only going to Marvi. Not that I am a Hafiz supporter, but logically speaking both were at fault. They both could have tried stopping themselves.

The whole point of a talk/debate show is to express differing views..if you cant handle it then you shouldnt be attending, period. However, although the Chap seems to be speaking over her i dont see him assaulting her and she also make antagonising remarks and eggs him along...she is to blame partly. Most comments appear to blame the clergy. This is not a healthy trend in a country already divided on ethnic and sectarian lines. There seems to be little tolerance in the society. Educated and learned people should know how to conduct and behave in such TV shows. They should set examples rather than losing temper while debating national issues on media. Perhaps, it is a cultural issue that we need to resolve. Incidences of violence against women in Pakistan have tarnished the country's image. The govt. should take serious notice and introduce effective measures to stop it. The clergy, intellectuals , academia and media also have a role to educate people on the issue. Pakistan should be projected as a true Islamic and progressive country.

only being covered by English print media which is read by only a few and effect is no more than storm in the cup, didnt see much in urdu print media. hopefully electronic media will cover this today. I miss the old days of Ptv when talk shows & hosts used to be decent & respectful - most of the private shows are just trying to gain viewership through sensationalizing the issues which is creating more hatred than awareness in general public. A lot of noise is being made in the support of MS. Marvi. However, in the video. One can clearly see Marvi raising her temper and talking to the Molana in an abusive way. At on point she is heard of calling him (Jahil) illetrate. With her continuous bickering she brought the matter to a point where the molana left the venue in disgust. It is a matter of equal rights for all. The lady was too noisy.
