ISLAMABAD: An order from the office of the Inspector General of Police was issued for the reversal of out-of-turn promotions of over 300 officers of the capital police on Monday, police sources told Dawn.

The seniority of the officers is also to be re-fixed after which they will be eligible for promotions in the future.

Those officers whose promotions are to reversed include superintendents of police, deputy superintendents of police, inspectors, sub-inspectors, assistant sub-inspectors and head hospitals, the sources said.

The order was issued keeping in view the Supreme Court’s precedent, which had in two cases declared that no police personnel or civil servant is entitled an out-of-turn promotion as a gallantry award or otherwise and also declared anti-dated seniority to a civil servant a violation of the law.

According to the sources, the order says that the promotions will be withdrawn or cancelled from the date of their issuance and that the seniority of these officials was to be re-fixed.

The concerned officers were also given a chance to contest against the order, the sources said and that it was the taking away of rewards and benefits from the concerned officials which they received during their out-of-turn promotion tenures was also being considered.

The process of calculating the amounts given to the officers in rewards has started, they said.
