Five factory workers die after inhaling toxic fumes at Korangi factory

KARACHI: At least five factory workers who were cleaning a chemical tank at a factory in Korangi Industrial Area died on Sunday.

Superintendent Police (SP) Landhi Afnan Amin said four workers got into the chemical tank to clean it, followed by three more men who attempted to rescue them. The incident occurred at a factory which manufactures polythene bags.

Five men who were brought dead to JPMC died as a result of inhaling toxic fumes, while one other worker is in stable condition at the hospital, head of JPMC's emergency unit, Dr Seemin Jamali said.

The factory has been cordoned off by police.

What the hell Fire Department's Wardens are doing? Are they not supposed to visit industrial complexes and ensure that proper Fire Fighting and Rescue Equipment are available at sites and are also functional, to meet immediate needs before fire tenders arrive. Looks like that entire official setup has been rendered dysfunctional. With availability of proper Fire Fighting and Rescue Equipment, including Gas Masks, such incident could easily be avoided. Some one has to look into this neglect.

In Pakistan, the condition of labor class is very miserable. Since they belong to the poor segment of the society, there is no value, dignity, and care for their life. In Pakistani factories, there are no proper health and safety standards in place. The workers are imparted training on health and safety measures. This is a clear criminal case of murder for which the factory owner, the supervisor, and the labor inspector, along with should be held responsible.

Its obvious people died due to negligence and improper labour practices. Who was their supervisor, manager or responsible for safety? Unless those negligent people are put in jail, no one pay attention to labour safety and more labourers may continue to die as usual. But who has the power to do justice? (Not corrupt administrators, of course).
