FAISALABAD: The Government College University Faisalabad (GCUF) administration on Thursday withdrew a circular asking the students to wear appropriate dress conforming to “religious norms and social values”.

VC Dr Muhammad Ali, denying he signed the circular, has issued a warning to Students Affairs Director Nadeem Sohail, for allegedly misusing his name in this connection.

The circular issued by Mr Sohail said that he had been directed to circulate the VC’s instructions that all varsity students should observe “appropriate attire that gives an appearance of neatness, decorum and respect.”

The students were advised against wearing dresses and having haircuts, which were “inappropriate for a place of learning like this university”.

It barred the GCUF students from wearing skintight bottom or top and casual footwear such as chappal, flip-flops etc. Messy and unkempt hairstyle should also be avoided, it said.

“All the male and female students are directed to observe the religious norms and social values for choosing their attire and appearance,” the circular reads.

Sources said the circular was issued without getting VC’s approval which annoyed Dr Muhammad Ali, who told the students affairs department to withdraw the same.

University spokesman Dr Abdul Qadir Mushtaq told Dawn that no inquiry had been initiated against the students affairs director who issued the circular on the direction of the discipline committee. He said the VC only issued a warning to Mr Sohail for “misusing his (VC’s) name.”

He said the circular had been withdrawn.
