ISLAMABAD, Nov 19: Presi-dent Gen Pervez Musharraf has reiterated commitment of the government to protect children’s rights.

“We attach high priority to the agenda of child rights and have taken a number of initiatives for their protection,” he said in a message to mark Universal Children’s Day being observed on Thursday.

President Musharraf said the commitment of the government was duly reflected in the public sector development programme particularly the education sector reforms and primary health care programme.

“We wish to create a congenial environment where every child has the opportunity to grow, develop and enrich his/her capabilities to the fullest possible extent without any kind of discrimination,” he added.

Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali in his message said the children were country’s greatest asset and the government was taking all measures to meet their development needs.

He called upon the society, NGOs, philanthropists, media, corporate sector, parents and teachers to come together and play their role in the effort to improve the lives of the children.

He said: “After ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) by Pakistan, we are committed to make proper provision for child rights agenda in various governmental policies and projects.”—APP
