Wasim Akram using IPL stint to hunt for new Pakistan coach

Pakistan cricket team’s new head coach is set to be appointed in the first week of May and the choice could possibly be from amongst the coaches in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season.

Waqar Younis resigned from the post after Pakistan’s disastrous exit from the recently concluded World Twenty20 and a committee which comprises of Ramiz Raja and Wasim Akram along with other members will choose his successor.

“The new coach will be appointed by first week of May and Wasim is also in India for the IPL to discuss with candidates,” Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Shaharyar Khan was quoted by Press Trust of India as saying.

Dean Jones and Tom Moody have also come under the PCB's radar candidates for the coaching job.

Moody is associated with Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL while Jones coached Islamabad United during the inaugural season of the Pakistan Super League.

Shaharyar also said that the new selection committee would be appointed next week after Haroon Rasheed's team was disbanded after a string of poor performances in limited-overs cricket.

Khan confirmed Mohsin Khan was approached for the position of the Chief Selector but the former batsman was 'interested in coaching the national side'.

Former Test cricketers Moin Khan and Iqbal Qasim are also being considered for positions in the national selection committee.

Pakistan’s next assignment is against England where the team will face the hosts in four Tests, five ODIs and a one-off Twenty20 match during the tour.

Get an international coach who understands T20, hire a local assistant coach who doesn't a mountain of an ego and is willing to learn, and can take the International coaches place in the 5 - 7 years ahead. Invest smartly for once PCB!

You can bring the greatest coach in the world but if you are going to retain likes of Shahzad,akmal,afridi,hafeez,malik in the team then it counts for nothing.Simple as that.

Iqbal Wasim may be a great individual but he has been in and out if the selection committee .. Find some younger and enterprising selector who knows more about cricket is is being played in this day n age . A nation of such immense talent but the PCB keeps recycling the same individuals over and over and over again. Old fogies must be received of their duties from too to bottom. .. Isn't it ironic for Pakistan cricket that Wasim is in India, scouting for future coach of Pakistan team. In reality, Wasim, Imran and Javed are and will always be the best people to run the PCB, based on their experience and international standing. The could be supported by a network of modern greats like Inzi, Younis, Yousaf, Shoaib.. if only, we were united and realised that amongst all this, image of Pakistan is getting tarnished.

Someone like Muke Hussey who understands all formats of the game or Steve Waugh, who was a master planner and a very shrewd cricketer would be good choices, provided that they agree to coach Pakistan. Moin Khan should not be included int he selection committee as he seemed to have learned from the captaincy of Imran Khan.

Please keep Moin Khan and Iqbal Qasim away from Pakistani Cricket. Mohsin Khan should be the coach as he is the only coach with good record with the Pakistani cricket team and chief selector should be Rashid Latif who is genuine and has a good eye for talent. Enough with Moin and Iqbal Qasim !!!!!

We have not have players like of Javed,Zaheer,Majid,Asif Iqbal, Inzi and Yousuf. We need positive attitude Batsman's to groom if and find a finisher player.If you are going to be par with top teams. Dean Jones can provide that aggressive style proof is the last victory at Islamabad. And who said that he could not work With Pakistani players. Give him a chance to prove the worth. Start the contract with an year and some options . Performance base rewards and renewals.

Iqbal Qasim and Moin Khan again ? Moin Khan embarrassed the Pakistan side in his last stint as Manager, now he will be chief selector ? Are they giving the head coach any say in the selection ? Also is there no chance they can employ Aamir Sohail, Inzamam or Mohammed Yousef as Chief Selectors ? We have tried a foreign coach and stopped because of the language issue, we need Simone more modern like Rahul Dravid or Sangakarra to teach the young Pakistani team how to bat under pressure

It's not the coach that is important, what is important is who is incharge of BCCP. I will say make Ian Chappell the head of BCCP and in due course of time all will be well for Pak. I think, even the international cricket will return to Pak. Think smart. Pak needs individuals from Western country to lead Pak institution as they are best in administration. There is a lot of brain drain from Pak to other countries and I think it is about time to turn the clock in the opposite direction.

Get real guys, set up a strong domestic structure first, something that produces quality cricketers whom a coach can further polish. Else you will continue to blame your coaches for not turning your "Afridi's" into match winners.

Ex-coach Waqar Younis is here in INDIA right now commentating (expert comments) for SONYMAX TV which is the broadcaster for IPL-9. I enjoy his comments, for they are lucid and precise, without any kind of bias...Waqar like his great fast bowling partner Wasim Akram who is still bowling coach for KKR team.....seems to like India a lot and gets along well with Indians...he is a nice man, dignified, intelligent and decent who feels completely at home in India...seems to be here in INDIA with his wife and kids...who i guess stay in Sydney, Australia.

They should also hire Viv as mentor and assistant coach. PK needs to go get the best possible coaching staff available and create a synergetic environment where they will manage as one united staff. No more clicks, country clubs or gangs. Everything should be done putting the team first and not the individual. All be based on one criteria and one only which is merit. End the corruption in PCB and bring in strong leaders. All new players should have to attend a military boot camp where they will learn honesty, team work, faith, respect, hard work, dignity and integrity. These are traits I do not see in the current crop of youngsters. All for one and one for all!

Coach has to be one who can work with Sarfraz and Misbah. Bringing foreign coach or domestic really doesn't matter much. For example in t20 and odi we still need to find bowling replacement for Ajmal and Hafeez, only resolving this issue will bring the team half way up...

Why not Viv Richards? He already showed what he can do with a team given the helm for Quetta, why not give him the position for the national team as well? Maybe our batsmen would learn how to play aggressive cricket for a change. Furthermore, he already has good understanding with Sarfaraz AND he is already willing to nurture the talent we have which more or less has been very latent so far. We keep hearing about how talented the team is, about time they produced some results as well.

The PCB board has not learned any lessons after the recent lose of face. The name of the coach is finalized even before the post was open. Dean Jones may be a good coach but insiders always leak the story. PCB needs to find the culprit who leaks the reports as it is disgrace for PCB. Wasim Akram has already hinted that Dean Jones will be the coach.
